The question on everyones lips when I said I was going to hike the trail again was, “Why?” I had many reasons for wanting to hike again, the biggest being that my '99 hike was incomplete. This of course lead to the inevitable, “Why don't you just pick up where you left off?”
Simple. I liked thru-hiking. I liked the people I met. I enjoyed being outside as the seasons passed. Thru-hiking was never an ordeal - something to be done just to say I did it no matter how much I hated it. Of course there were hardships. Of course there were times I was miserable, or in pain. I had a terrific time! Since if I loved thru-hiking so much, why didn't I just thru-hike again?
In time, I found the real hardship was waiting for Hike II to begin.
