June 2, 1996

June 2, 1996. 5 miles today. The switchbacks were covered with snow so we all charged up the steep snow / ice covered incline indicated. The 75lb. pack and the altitude really took its toll. I spent 5.5 hours to go from trail camp to trail crest. Now I am below the timber line camping near a babbling stream with lots of plush green fur trees.

June 2, 1996. Between Trail Camp and Trail Crest. I am not quite half way there and I am already exhausted. The air is so thin that I would take 10 steps and rest for 2 minutes.

June 2, 1996. Ten Yards from Trail Crest. I offered the guy $1,000 to take my pack up the rest of the way. He declined but offered to take this picture. You can pretty much see the day's hike in the background. It looked much steeper in real life. Five and one half hours it took to get up that dang hill with that pack. It brought me within 2.4 miles of the Whitney Summit, and those that had done it before told me the worst was behind me, and tried to tempt me into going up. But it was late and I had to get down to lower altitudes to make a camp for the night.

June 2, 1996. Looking west towards Guitar lake. If you look close you can see an overly friendly marmot in the foreground.
