Thanks so much to everyone that wrote me with well wishes, suggestions and comments. I sincerely appreciate your input. So far I have received over 700 emails regarding the newsletter and I have come across only 1 negative email so far. Obviously, I have not read all of your emails yet but I am working through them. So, without further ado, here are the results. The Quiz Goodies are getting about a 70% approval rating so far from those who have commented on it. Being that as it may, I'm going to try it out for a few issues and see how you like it. If everyone aren't getting anything out of it I'll do some rearranging. The Q & A Section seems to be a big hit. I would estimate an approval rating of over 90%. I was very pleased to see that. So, keep your questions coming in and be sure to let me know if it is alright to publish your first initial and last name with your question. Also, please send me any suggestions you might have on tutorial topics that you would like to see. I, like Joe, get many of my topic ideas from questions and suggestions that you, the subscriber send in, so keep them coming. Next, the News Goodies. Not many comments on this yet. I wonder if you aren't quite sure what to expect from this. Well, it's pretty short and sweet. This will be simply a few links to technology related news that I think you might find interesting or funny. We'll just how it goes. Now I'll bet you were wondering about the Remember This section. In fact, most of you mentioned this. Yes, I will be keeping that section alive and well just as soon as I get Joe to reveal his source for all of those great little factoids. Look for it to reappear before the end of the month. Lastly, the editorial section. This section will be much like the Goodies to Go newsletter that you have become accustomed to. It will have comments and opinions on technology related topics. (usually) Granted, you haven't seen it yet but you will. Thanks again! /-------------------------------------------------------------------\ Is Screen Resolution Affecting Your Site’s Appearance? Some of the most common factors that cause browser display problems include monitor size, screen resolution, type of operating system, different browsers and versions of those browsers. Although the combination of these factors could be different for each site visitor, learn how to design a site that looks good in multiple screen resolutions and performs well for the vast majority of your visitors at: http://www.netmechanic.com/newsletter/screenres.htm \--------------------------------------------------------------adv.-/ Quiz Goodies *********************************** Below you will find a question regarding opening a new window in JavaScript. My question is how do make a hyperlink that your viewer can click on to close a window? Q & A Goodies *********************************** Q. Would the existing tutorials remain or should we expect changes in that respect? A. This is an easy one. Our plan is only to grow the list of tutorials and articles that you currently enjoy. Q. I WAS VERY CLOSE TO FINISHING A WEBSITE IN WHICH I USED MOSTLY FRAMES. Well, all was fine and dandy until I finished. You see, I was working with a 1600x1200 resolution on my monitor and when I changed it to 800x600 ...well...I think you know the reaction I had. A. You're not going to like this answer much. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix for this with frames. Frames can be your best friend and your worst nightmare which is probably why most browsers are talking about terminating support for them in future releases. As a general rule, most designers create pages in the lowest common denominator which is usually accepted to be 800x600. This is a hard lesson to learn but we have all been there. Your only real alternative is to redesign your pages which, hopefully, won't be too many. Pages with frames can give you a very nice presentation when done right but the problem is they are very unforgiving. Many professional designers these days actually avoid using them for just that reason and opt for using tables. By using tables in your designs you will find your site be be much more flexible. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Good luck! Q. I had a question about opening new windows... How can I do it so that I can open two different new windows? For example, I've got my index page, which opens the main page to a new window (I needed it a certain size). But the problem is, I want the downloads section to open a new window, separate from the main window. But since I can't figure out how I can do that, it keeps opening in the main window, rather than in a new one. A. By reading your question I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to accomplish but here it goes. It sounds like what you need is the help of a little JavaScript. Opening a new window and even multiple windows is fairly easy with JavaScript. First, you might want to read the the tutorial "So You Want to Open a New Window, Huh?" at http://www.htmlgoodies.com/beyond/openwin.html Next, create a JavaScript function on your page that opens a a new window. You can then pass that function the name of the page that you want opened. For Example: function NewWindow(page_name) { window.open(page_name,'newwindow',config='height=100, ... Now all you have to do is send the function the page you want to open. You can open as many new pages as you like, however, keep in mind that a whole bunch of pages open at once can easily confuse and annoy a viewer. If you want to open several pages at once you can simply call your function from within the If you copy this script into an HTML document in the section, you can see the result is a 12pt, red, bold, italic font. *** This question was submitted to our Mentor Community. The answer was provided by Chris, one of our JavaScript Mentors. Q. Do you know where I can get statistics on how often certain web browsers and versions, screen resolutions and color depths, and plug-ins are being used by the general web surfing community? This would help me a lot in deciding what tags to use in my web pages and what media I can offer. Thanks for your time. A. I'll bet you are wondering why you are reading the same question again this week. Well, that's my fault. I had narrowed down the questions for last week's newsletter and chose a question that was asking about web statistics on their site. However, when I did my cut and paste I put the question above in instead. So, here's a much better answer to the question. Hopefully, some of you got some useful information out of last month's question anyway. There are several sites that provide some statistics on different aspects of the surfing community at large. They can make for some interesting reading and help you determine how you may want to implement your designs. Coding the action after the user has entered the information is what can become difficult. Here is the form in its simplest state:

Username:

Password:

You can use 2 text boxes for the user's input. The first is a standard text box with the TYPE set to "text". The second text box is for the password, so the TYPE is set to "password" which will mask the user's input as it is typed. The rest is just your standard form. Many developers will set the action to call a special page to verify the user's name and password. In the example above the form calls an ASP page called "process" that contains the custom script for verification. And Remember This ... *********************************** Did you know that America's Uncle Sam was actually a real person? Samuel Wilson (a.k.a. Uncle Sam) was meat packer and politician from upstate New York. He got his nickname during the War of 1812 when he stamped boxes of beef and pork for the United States soldiers with a "U.S." Since U.S. was not an abbreviation used at the time, jokes were made that U.S. stood for Uncle Sam and the name stuck. >From the stamp the joke grew to encompass all government issued supplies and some soldiers even began referring to themselves as "Uncle Sam's men". In 1820, the first cartoon of Uncle Sam appeared in a New England newspaper. At the time he was clean shaven and wore a black tophat and tailcoat. Through the years he has evolved into the red, white and blue character that we know today. ************************************************************* EarthWeb's family of online services for IT insiders ************************************************************* IT MANAGEMENT http://www.earthweb.com/dlink.index-jhtml.72.949.-.0.jhtml HARDWARE & SYSTEMS http://www.earthweb.com/dlink.index-jhtml.72.995.-.0.jhtml NETWORKING & COMMUNICATIONS http://www.earthweb.com/dlink.index-jhtml.72.951.-.0.jhtml WEB DEVELOPMENT http://www.earthweb.com/dlink.index-jhtml.72.984.-.0.jhtml SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT http://www.earthweb.com/dlink.index-jhtml.72.950.-.0.jhtml ************************************************************ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Advertising: If you are interested in advertising in our newsletters, call Claudia at 1-203-662-2863 or send email to mailto:nsladsales@internet.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For contact information on sales offices worldwide visit http://www.internet.com/mediakit/salescontacts.html ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For details on becoming a Commerce Partner, contact David Arganbright on 1-203-662-2858 or mailto:commerce-licensing@internet.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To learn about other free newsletters offered by internet.com or to change your subscription visit http://e-newsletters.internet.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ internet.com's network of more than 160 Web sites is organized into 16 channels: Internet Technology http://internet.com/it E-Commerce/Marketing http://internet.com/marketing Web Developer http://internet.com/webdev Windows Internet Technology http://internet.com/win Linux/Open Source http://internet.com/linux Internet Resources http://internet.com/resources ISP Resources http://internet.com/isp Internet Lists http://internet.com/lists Download http://internet.com/downloads International http://internet.com/international Internet News http://internet.com/news Internet Investing http://internet.com/stocks ASP Resources http://internet.com/asp Wireless Internet http://internet.com/wireless Career Resources http://internet.com/careers EarthWeb http://www.earthweb.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To find an answer - http://search.internet.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Looking for a job? Goodies Thoughts - Goodbye Winter Olympics *********************************** I'm sure the close of the 2002 Winter Olympics came with a big sigh of relief for some of you. Now you can get back to all of your regular shows on NBC that got bumped. I have never really been a big fan of the Winter Olympics before but this year's Olympics held some real interest. I don't know, maybe it was the new snowboarding events, maybe it was getting to see some events like Curling on CNBC that I didn't even know existed or maybe I'm just getting older. Whatever the reason, it was nice to slow down for a while and watch some of the best athletes in the world give it everything they had for a medal. It was a lot of fun cheering for my country's athletes and for some of the underdog athletes of other countries like Switzerland's wonder kid Simon Ammann who effortlessly floated down the hill in the ski jump competition. You had to smile when you watched him check out his jump results. You could almost feel his excitement though the T.V. There were also quite a few firsts for the Winter Olympics. There were both male and female African American and Hispanic medalists. There was the addition of the snowbaording events which got the games off to a very energetic start. There was unprecedented security. And there was the the first third generation Olympic athlete, Jimmy Shea, who carried a photograph of his grandfather (the first generation Olympic athlete) who was killed by a drunk driver just a few months before he would have had the opportunity to watch his grandson bring home the gold. Now any competition wouldn't be complete without some good old- fashioned controversy like the Russians threatening to pull out of the games as a result of the whole pairs figure-skating fiasco. Or the South Korean protests over the loss of the gold in the speedskating competition due to a bumping call. All-in-all the games went smooth and fair and I, for one, am actually looking forward to the next Winter Olympics. From opening to closing the Winter Olympics are just a brief moment in history where the world can get together to share the joys, the disappointments and the over- whelming emotions of competing for the love of the sport and not for the power of the all-mighty dollar. Some websites show a small graphic logo in the MSIE address bar, instead of the standard IE "e on a page" logo (Netscape does not show the alternate logo in its address bar). The question - how can I get my site to put up a logo in the address bar? A. What you are seeing is Favicon. It is a 16x16 image that when linked correctly in your HTML code, it will show up in the address bar. You can make your own Favicon and then upload it to your site. In the HEAD section of your HTML code you would link to it like this: Take a look at this site: http://www.favicon.com It will explain the whole process and it even has an online editor so you can create your own Favicon. *** This question was submitted to our Mentor Community. You should also include a link incase someone has javascript disabled. See below. Click the link below if you are not automatically redirected.

To make it look a bit more readable we will add the parentheses before and after the area code and separate the prefix from the suffix with a dash. To restrict how many characters the user can enter in each box we will use the MAXLENGTH attribute. This simply tells the browser that no matter what the size of the text box is, only accept x number of characters. Here's an example of the HTML:

So, I thought I would take an issue or two to share some of my experiences and impressions thus far. So, what exactly is .NET? Well, Microsoft says it is a whole new way of thinking and they weren't kidding. The idea behind .NET is that everything works together in a much more cohesive way. How does it work? Whatever language you choose to program in, Visual Basic, COBOL, C++, C# or any other supported language, the code you write gets compiled into an IL (intermediate language). For example, if I wrote an application in C# and you wrote an application with the exact same features in COBOL.NET, the IL that your code and my code gets compiled down to should be virtually identical even though we are using two totally different languages. Once your code is compiled into the IL, that IL is taken and compiled again down to Machine Code (the base language of the computer). Therefore, everything available to you in COBOL.NET is also available to me in C#. The choice of scripting language now is pure preference. So, what does this have to do with the web? Well, if you are writing HTML only and have no desire to add ASP type interactivity to your webs then it really doesn't effect you. However, if you use or plan to use ASP on your sites it has a big impact. With ASP.NET you can now use any .NET language that you are comfortable with like those listed above. This means that ASP.NET is much more powerful now that you aren't limited to the scaled down scripting languages (VBScript and JavaScript). Has ASP itself changed? Yep, it sure has. In creating my new ASP.NET pages I found that many of the things that I had become used to doing in ASP no longer applied. It required a whole lot less coding in ASP.NET to accomplish the same sorts of tasks. On the flip side, it required learning a whole new way of doing and thinking about my common ASP tasks. Many of the tasks that used to require going back and forth from the server to the browser are no longer the case. Now, a great many things run on the server in real time using Web Form Controls instead of using the standard HTML web forms . This has some very distinct advantages. For example, when a person is entering information on a form you can check their input as they go giving them immediate feedback on mistakes. You can react to a bunch of different events such as changing the selection in a drop down list box. You can perform immediate calculations every time the user changes the contents of a text box. Can't I do the same kinds of things in JavaScript? I many cases, yes you can but ASP.NET does make it a whole lot simpler and it even automatically adapts to the browser environment it is running in. So, is it worth learning? Absolutley. If you are interested in producing more interactive websites it is definitely worth checking out. Obviously, ASP.NET won't be for everyone but it is worth a look. Will it be difficult to learn? That's going to totally depend on the person. Using ASP.NET is definitely a whole different ballgame, it's almost a different sport altogether. I would suggest picking up an introductory book like ASP.NET for Dummies and reading through at least the first half of the book. If you finish and have a splitting headache and you feel disoriented then ASP.NET is probably not for you. For those of you who are already ASP developers, you may want to check out these books as well: ASP.NET Tips, Tutorials and Code from SAMS and Teach Yourself ASP.NET in 21 Days also from SAMS. If you are already an ASP developer or have done some ASP work in the past your transition may actually be more difficult than if you started learning ASP.NET from the ground up. With ASP.NET you will have to forget and relearn several common tasks. In the long run, tough, learning ASP.NET will definitely make you more productive even though it may not seem that way as you begin climbing that learning curve. In the next issue we will look as some specific examples of how ASP and ASP.NET are different. Thanks for reading! Do you know of anywhere where I could find an easy tutorial for PHP? A. Here's a couple of sites you might want to check out: http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/01/48/index2a.html?tw=programming -- excellent beginner's tutorial, read this first. http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/programming/php/tutorials/tutorial4.html -- pretty good intro tutorial on PHP & MySQL. http://www.onlamp.com/php/ -- O'Reilly publishers' PHP section, always high quality tutorials and articles here. http://www.devshed.com/Server_Side/PHP -- mostly, but not exclusively, advanced tutorials. http://www.php.net - the manual page is indispensable, so I thought I'd mention that too. *** This question was submitted to our Mentor Community. I have defined the frames like this:        Since I added (w3c recommendation) the following information to my right   frame (IE6.0):     I have the problem that the vertical scrolling bar of the right frame   doesn't disappear, even if the content isn't larger than the available   space.(for exampe 60 lines of blah
blah) It only disappears if the   content does also fit the frame in height.   How can I make the vertical scroll bar appear only if the content is  larger than the frame? A. Try setting the scrolling attribute as such: You can set it to yes, no, or auto. Auto will put the scrollbar on the page only if the content goes off the page. *** This question was submitted to our Mentor Community. The answer was provided by Ryan Flynn, one of our HTML Mentors. Q. You may remember the one of the questions in the Q & A section in issue 165. You said that you used server side includes to handle different parts of your site that are common to pages. However, the extensions of the pages in your website are .html, not .asp. So, how can they work? I know that they only work if the page extensions are asp. The html pages are discarded for processing. So, the question is, how do you make it work in pages with html extension. A. You can include pages like this: This works only if your web server is configured to recognize the #include. Basically what happens is the server has to read through your page and look for any instances of #include, get the appropriate files and insert them into your page. Because ASP pages are interpreted, the server effectively "reads" every page before it sends the page to the browser. With HTML that's not necessarily the case. In the case of HTML pages the server usually just finds the page and then sends it on its merry way not caring what its contents are. You will have to check with your host provider or server administrator to see if #include is available to you in HTML pages. Also, be careful when including pages. If you try to combine pages and end up with multiple and tags, for example, you will confuse the heck out of the browser. In the early 13th century he invented a number sequence that goes like this - 1,2,3,5,8,13,21 etc. It is simply a series of numbers where each number is the sum of the previous two numbers, except for the first two of course. He originally came up with the sequence to explain the breeding rate of rabbits but found that the sequence applied to a great many other things in nature. For example, if you count the clockwise and counterclockwise spirals of seeds in the head of a sunflower you will find the Fibonacci numbers. /-------------------------------------------------------------------\ ** When Face-to-Face is the Only Way ** The Internet is great for exchanging information and ideas, but nothing beats in-person learning and networking. Contrary to what some of you might have surmised, Internet.com has not been purchased by Microsoft and you will not see Microsoft logos popping up on every site. I just happened to have been designing a site with ASP.NET over the past several weeks and I wanted to share some of my experiences. As you know, you will receive email announcements from time to time by paid advertisers. The advertisers allow this newsletter and HTMLGoodies.com to be a free service. Goodies Thoughts - Got Broadband? *********************************** You hear a lot of talk about the benefits of broadband and how it will revolutionize how we use the web. So, what exactly is broadband and how is it going to impact how we live? Broadband services offer download speeds that are between 10 and 50 times faster that a 56k dial-up connection. Broadband is a sort of catch-all phrase used to describe high speed access which would include cable and DSL service. Faster download times open up a wide range of possibilities to the consumer like renting streaming DVD quality movies via the internet, viewing live video feeds from around the world or playing high quality interactive games with your friends. It also opens up a number of possibilities to business making it easier for business to offer information and software that doesn't take all day to download plus streaming video of products and/or services. So, why aren't there more services like that available? Even though broadband access grew at a rate of almost 70% last year, the fact remains that about 80% of all U.S. subscribers still access using a dial-up service. Until the percentage of broadband users climbs up closer to 50%, don't expect a lot of companies start catering to broadband subscribers. Right now the computer gaming industry is the only industry truly taking advantage of broadband's capabilities. It can cost a nice little chunk of change to upgrade software and produce broadband content. Companies in other industries are simply waiting until the number of users climbs to a level they feel would provide them with a good return on their investment. So why aren't more people getting broadband service? There are a few reasons. Broadband service can be much more expensive. Typically dial-up ISP's charge anywhere from $10 to $25 per month but DSL and cable subscribers can typically expect to pay $40 to $60 per month. There are benefits to the extra cost besides the time saving issue of faster downloads. You don't need to have an extra telephone line or tie up a line when you are accessing the internet because DSL and cable are always on. It also makes it easier and more efficient to share a connection between multiple computers in a home or small business. Availability is the second and probably the most important issue. Right now, service is simply not available to many smaller towns, cities and rural areas. So, if I get broadband service does that mean I will be able to host my own web server? Well, actually, for anything beyond a personal website, probably not. Most broadband service providers discourage individuals from running their own web servers. Some require that you obtain you IP address automatically which makes it impossible to assign your domain name to an IP address. Also, most providers limit your upload to about 128k which means while files download to your machine at 50 times faster than a dial-up, files originating from your computer go back out at about 2 times the speed of a dial-up connection. This limitation alone would make it impossible to host more than a very lightly trafficked site. Well, then what good is it? Personally, I don't think I could live without it now that I have it. To me, the download time savings is worth it alone. If you are a web designer or developer working from home, broadband is a must. Even if you are a casual surfer, you will probably appreciate the lightning fast download rates especially if you are used to waiting 2 hours to download a piece of software only to find out the transmission failed half-way through. Eventually, when DSL service becomes available in my area I will probably switch from cable to DSL with a static IP. This will allow me to host my own personal website. There is no doubt that broadband service subscriptions will increase over the next several years at a rapid rate. The only question is when will companies start investing the capital to take advantage of all of the opportunities that broadband service creates. Thanks for reading! I'm trying to construct a way for the owner of the site to remotely update the cart prices & etc and add products. I'm using an Access 2000 database and would like a "log-in" page with a username and password. I'm wondering what the best secure way of doing this is? Is there an encryption I can use to store the passwords? A. Create a table in your access database that stores the username/password combination for each user. Verify the login info against that table. If verified, set a session variable for the user that can be checked from all of the secure pages. This prevents someone from getting the URL of a secure page and accessing it. You HAVE to login to do your work. Furthermore, if you want the username and/or password to be encrypted (above and beyond SSL), write an encryption script to be used when entering the data, and write the corresponding decryption script to be run whenever the data is accessed. *** This question was submitted to our Mentor Community. Is there an easy way to do this? A. I accomplish this on my personal site by making the frame border resizable by the visitors. They can drag it to the edge of the window if they want. There's a "noresize" attribute added to frames to make them non-resizable. Just don't include it. You could also provide a link to frames and non-frames versions of the site. *** This question was submitted to our Mentor Community.
