High Above Salt Creek
We woke early in case a ranger came by. (We only had a permit for one night at Salt Creek and last night was a second one due to the unexpected rain.)
We went back to the "spring" to fill up the bladders. I took a head dunk but since the sun still wasn't up over the spring yet it felt like ice.
We hiked to a certain point and dropped our packs. Then we did a "packs off" hike (Thank God for small favors) to see the All American Man rock art and some Anasazi ruins.
On the way, we stopped in a cave and checked it out. Missy said there used to be a lot of arrowheads in the cave but people had taken them over the years. While we were hiking a golden eagle flew over our heads. It was magnificent. It was a tremendous bird and had slow wing strokes.
After seeing All American Man we ate some snacks and took a family picture.
Missy thought it would be a good idea for us to hike back separately, five minutes apart to get some more solo time. It was a great idea. I did a little power walking, a little tricep work, etc.
We got back to our packs and waited for Missy. One of the other patrols wound up joining us. We did the final ascent for the day together and ate dinner and camped together. Susan made some awesome cookies out of the measley ingredients in our packs.
I was trying to recall all the funny things that had happened on the trip so far and write them in my journal. Jamie and Susan were helping me for a while. Later, when we were in our sleeping bags all was dark and silent, Jamie just burst out laughing. It came out of nowhere! He had remembered another funny thing which made him laugh so much that he couldn't even speak to share it with us. Of course laughter is infectious so we all started laughing even though we had no idea what we were laughing at.
OK. I guess we started getting a little punchy on day eight.
