Mitten Canyon
Susan joined Missy on the trek to meet the truck. The rest of us got to sleep late. We didn't get up until 7a.m.!
We ate breakfast and I told stories of my accident prone, teenage years when I visited family in Greensboro, NC. I think everyone got a kick out of them. In fact, someone actually spit their oatmeal out while laughing.
We began the day by taping and moleskining ourselves in various places. (Moleskin is a kind of second skin to cover blisters so they don't break open and get worse.) Then we went to fill up the water bladders. We needed to get enough to get us through half of day six. The water source was down near the cottonwood tree we had rested at yesterday. "Near" being a relative term. We had to bushwhack a little and go down and somewhat around the small creek. The water had a film of stuff (algae?) so we had to filter it through a bandana. After we filled the bladders, we dumped some on our heads. Ayyyyyyy! It was freezing but it felt great.
A little later Dan, Jamie and I went for a walk. We saw some trees which looked like they had been burnt by lightening and we briefly got a glimpse of a deer. When we got back we started lunch and Missy and Susan showed up shortly thereafter.
After lunch we packed up and hiked along the road for a mile then we began the day's challenge. We scrambled and climbed up a steep drainage filled with boulders and scree. (It was about 700-800 feet higher than where we started.) The total height we got to was approximately 6000 ft.
It was very tough but the restful morning helped us have the energy to do it. I felt like I was getting a little stronger each day although Missy still had to help us in many ways. This type of scramble must have been nerve racking for Missy because unlike other times that we hiked, we were vertical to each other. If a rock fell, one of us could've gotten hit with it.I have to say...as much as we breathe heavily, moan, grumble and are in pain, we laugh and laugh and laugh.
For dessert Missy pulled a surprise out of her pack. M&Ms...yes M&Ms. We were ecstatic.
The butte that we reached and camped at was amazing. Most of the places we'd camped before had been sided by one canyon or rockface. At this camp, we were up high and had low canyons on both sides, creating a feeling of being on top of the world! The sunset was beautiful tonight.
Red sky at night...
Full sky of stars and the Milky Way again. Only five more days to go!
