Horse Canyon
Today was a mellow day. We woke before sun up, had a quick, dry breakfast (conserving water) and headed out across the cinnamon bun canyon and up over the pass we were supposed to finish yesterday. We had to pass our packs on the way down.
Missy was trusting us to stick together and be safe while she scouted ahead for the best routes.
After we dropped down (more bushwhacking), we went approximately a mile down the dirt road. It was HOT and the packs were heavy. We sat under a cottonwood tree and took shade and rest. Dan, Susan and Missy went to find a water source.
After lunch of soup and Ramen noodles (yum, Jamie's favorite!) Missy, Dan, Susan and I went for a walk to see Thirteen Faces. There were actually only 10 faces that we could see. It was Anasazi rock art of people. They looked like they might have been a royal family or chieftain group or something. There were distinctly male and female faces with intricate adornments. Most of the faces were drawn in white "paint" but there were red accents in places that could have been some distinguishing characteristic. Who knows?
We hung out there for a while and contemplated what the thirteen faces were about.
Part of the hike involved locating a campsite. We found a nice one (not that there are any bad ones out here). We ate tortillas, beans and Spanish rice thanks to Susan and Margaret. At the meeting that night we mapped out the rest of the trip.
We also pulled food and gear out of our packs that we decided we didn't really need and that was just adding weight. Missy knew where the truck would be re-supplying the other patrols the next morning so she volunteered to get up early and meet the truck to drop off the things we were getting rid of. It made our packs much lighter.
We had a meeting about what Missy expected of us while she was gone. She reminded us about stove safety and said she didn't want any one of us to go off alone. I asked if someone should stay with our stuff at all times. To which, there was prompt laughter and Missy sarcastically said, "Yes, we really need to worry about someone stealing our things out here. Girl, you've been living in the city too long!"
Oh! I saw two shooting stars tonight...yeh!
