The sound system in our van consists of two 4" speakers, two 5 1/4"
speakers, one subwoofer, a four channel amplifier, and an AM/FM/CD/MP3 head unit
The details are on the next two pages.
The head unit is a Clarion DB625MP AM/FM/CD/MP3 player. It comes with a 50 watt per channel X 4 internal amplifier, a removable face, and it will play regular CD's, MP3's and Windows Media files (WMA). The MP3 sound quality is comparable to CD quality and one MP3 disk (CD disk) will hold up to 10 hours of music. No need for a CD changer, and you only need a couple of CD's for most trips. It also displays the artist and song title while it's playing. There is an internal graphic equalizer, and pre-amp outputs for extra amplifiers and a subwoofer.
The front door speakers are Infinity Reference 452i , 4" coaxial speakers. There are closed cell foam enclosures behind them to protect them from moisture, and to enhance the sound quality. The window crank is metal with a plastic cover. You just pull back the plastic cover, then heat the metal part of the crank with a propane torch to bend it up slightly to clear the speaker cover. There are window crank spacers available through VW for about $20 if you care to get them..
The rear speakers are Infinity Reference 552i 5 1/4" coaxial speakers. They fit in the stock location with some enlarging of the holes. There are closed cell foam enclosures behind them to enhance the sound quality. If you have air conditioning, then 5 1/4" speakers are the largest you will be able to fit without cutting into the air conditioning housing.
This is how our rear speakers look from the front seat. If you are sitting in the rear seat we could make your ears bleed if we don't like you (it can get pretty loud).
