Upgrades

Even with the headlight relay upgrade documented in vanagon.com and 80/100 watt blue bulbs we still didn't feel that there was enough light during certain conditions (fog, strong rain, going through mountain winding roads, etc).   We installed these Hella model 500 driving lights.   They are 55 watt H-3 bulb driving lights and are amazing in the amount of light they put out, but it is a beam that is flat on top so you don't blind
oncoming cars.   They are wired so that when the high beams are on the driving lights automatically go off.

Our Westy is a 4 speed, so we went with a Gene Berg short shift kit that includes a shifter extension so that when you are cruising with the armrests down the shift knob is at the perfect level.   Also, you don't risk smashing your knuckles or your CD player when you shift into third gear.   The gray cover over the shift lever is rubberized
electrical covering you can buy at most good hardware stores and building centers (Lowes, Home Depot, Scottie's, etc).

The firewall behind the radiator and headlights was covered with a heat reflective
material that has insulation on one side and an aluminum coating on the other.   We purchased this through J.C. Whitney and have used it for several projects.   It's handy stuff and not very expensive ($26.95 for a 48"x72" sheet), it's applied with a heat
resistant spray adhesive that goes for $9.95.   It has really helped to keep the footwell area of the van much cooler.
