Ellen grew up in Reform temples and is active in Reform and Conservative circles. She is a longtime member of Congregation Beth Chayim Chadashim in Los Angeles and has played many roles in the temple, including board member, newsletter editor, vice president, and service leader. She is also a member of , a Conservative synagogue in Venice, CA.
A formally trained mezzo-soprano, Ellen has sung with elite regional choirs Kol Echad Chorale and Los Angeles Zimriyah Chorale. She has been studying with top vocal coach Cantor Nathan Lam and is an associate member of the American Conference of Cantors, studying for certification as a Reform cantor.
In May 2003, Ellen earned a master's degree in Judaic studies at Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles, having acquired a solid foundation in Bible, rabbinics, Jewish history, and Jewish philosophy. She has been a lecturer, teacher, and guest darshanit at synagogues, JCCs, and other venues across the U.S. on Jewish topics and is available to be a speaker or scholar-in-residence for your organization. Ellen lives in Culver City, California, with her husband, Spencer Gill, who works in motion picture postproduction, and their dog, Molly. When she is not learning music, writing, reading books to review, singing, or studying Hebrew, her favorite activities are reading for pleasure, watching episodic dramas or old movies on television, cooking, and petting Spencer and the dog.
