If you're a mother who requires specialized care during your pregnancy, you will be referred to a perinatologist. These specialists consult with patients and other providers about high-risk pregnancies, plus evaluate and manage them until the baby's birth. A perinatologist, or maternal-fetal medicine subspecialist, is a doctor who has received specialized training in the care of women with high-risk pregnancies. The perinatologist also diagnoses and treats unborn babies with birth defects. Women usually are referred for perinatal services when they have a family history of birth defect or genetic condition, medical illness that may complicate the pregnancy or are identified as being "high-risk" (i.e. multiple births). The perinatologists at the Maternal Fetal Center also accept transfers of pregnant women from hospitals
throughout Central Florida when the mother or fetus requires specialty care. The
perinatologists work closely with the neonatologists and pediatric medical and
surgical subspecialists to provide state-of-the-art care for women and children.
