You have a distance librarian to assist you. Whether you are taking classes at a center, on your own through the Internet, or are a Dixie student outside the St. George area, Martha Talman is available to help you. She may be reached through email at talman@dixie.edu, by phone at (435) 652-7722, or by fax at (435) 673-1169.
If you need a book or periodical article, we'll be glad to send it to the center where your class is held or to you if your class is online. You may find books in the Browning library by going to the online catalog. You also have access to online books at eBooks. If you would like a library book, please fill out the Library Materials Request form.
Periodical articles from journals, newspapers, and magazines are also available. To locate articles within periodicals, you need to use a periodical index, many of which are available online as electronic databases. You may access electronic databases containing indexes and full-text of periodical articles from your home computer. To do this, you need to "trick" your computer into thinking it is actually at Dixie State College. This is done by installing a "proxy server".
You will first need to contact a librarian for an ID and password to access the proxy server. You may contact your distance education librarian, Martha Talman, by email at talman@dixie.edu, by phone at (435) 652-7722, or by fax at (435) 673-1169 for the ID and password.
After receiving your ID and password, to use the proxy server, go to Off-campus Access . While connected to the proxy server you will be able to access most of the online databases found within the library; however, normal Web sites will display slower. Make sure and log off when you're done using the databases to reset your computer's usual settings.
If you need a book or periodical article we do not have, we will be happy to locate it from another library and then send the item to you. You do not need to locate the material, we will find it for you. However, please give us as much information as possible on the Library Materials Request form.
Online Reference Sources can help you!
You may also submit reference questions online through our Electronic Reference Service.
The Browning Library is committed to serving the distance students of Dixie State College and we hope you will let us know what we can do to make your educational experience more fruitful. Please email us at Library Distance Services to tell us your needs.
