Another of many great arias from the 19th century French repertoire which were once fairly standard but have now fallen out of fashion. This is an excellent aria for displaying a smooth tone and legato line in the middle mezzo-soprano range. I've included the recitative for those who are interested, but I believe in most contexts it would better to omit it in performance.
There is a French-language synopsis of Cinq-Mars on François Davin's Gounod website. I know of no English-language synopsis available online.
I started writing an arrangement of this aria with a string quartet accompaniment, but that project is not a top priority. If you'd be interested in such an arrangement, please let me know.
