Hello friends and family,
Well I'm back in Prague. Many of you probably do not even
know I left. Here is the story: On June 15, Jo and I switched
hostels. The hostel we were staying in was not very close to
the center and had no aesthetic value (think communistic
functionalism). We found another hostel that had just
opened for the Summer. It was on a small island accessible
by one of the bridges that cross the river here in
Prague. We checked it out and it seemed ok. The
rooms (there were only 2) were converted gyms that
held about fifty people each. The hostel was having a
special since they had just opened. They charged us 280
Krones for two nights. That's roughly $4.00 a night.
That night we went out with the Australian pilot
to a
dinner at another "typical Czech restaurant." The
restaurant had a nice patio set up in front and a very
dark and smoky indoor restaurant. We chose to sit outside.
We looked at the menu that was posted outside and it
looked reasonable. On our table was a smaller menu in a
Plexiglas stand. There were only a few choices so we asked
for the other menu. "No" we were told. That menu is only
for people who eat inside. The waitress was not very customer
oriented. We went ahead and ordered our meals. I ordered
some sort of beef dish. The Australian, Tom, ordered goulash.
His portion was so small he had to order a second one! I also
ordered a coke. The price was 7 Krones. When the bill
came the waitress charged me for three. She said that in
the menu one coke was 11 dl. (some sort of obscure
measurement, I guess.) The glass was she brought me was
33 dl. Thus, I needed to pay for three. Now, in all fairness,
the total amounted to less than a dollar, but it still angered
me. Everyone says you will be ripped off in Prague,
hopefully that will be my only experience.
