Hi everybody,
OK, I know I said I would send this note
out a while ago...and really I don't have any
excuse since I am home now. But I know that
much of the allure of these notes had been lost
once I admitted I was in Danville and not Paris.
Well, lets get to the main event. For those of
you who were unaware, I was going to Greece to
visit a penpal I had been writing to on-and-off for
close to ten years (since junior high). We had never
met but had talked on the phone twice. Anyway, I
got to Athens
(a three hour bus ride from the port)
around 11:00pm. Nick (my friend)
took a bus from his house and
met me there. We took the bus to his
house where I met his mother and sister. His father
was staying at their new apartment because they
thought the current apartment was too small.
His mother, who spoke no English, gave us a
delicious meal served with Amstel beer. Then she
turned on the switch to have the hot water turn
on and I took a long needed shower. It was very
hot that night but I still slept pretty well.
The next day (I slept way into the afternoon) Nick
and I left for his family's summer house on a nearby
island, Aegina. This seemed to be the best solution to
the apartment's overcrowding problem. Before we left
I met his father, a judge. He spoke a minuscule amount
of English. (Nick's parents actually met while taking an
English class, but as Nick says, were too busy looking
at each other to learn anything).
