Marginal Markings Committee

Design Elements

Stamps design was always an important consideration in the development of a new issue.  However, it wasn't until 1976 that the stamps design intentionally spilled out into the margins.  Between then and now, designers have become ever increasingly creative in using the entire sheet or pane rather than just the area within the perforations.

1.  Integrated design places the stamps within a larger image.

2.  Supportative design elements provide stand-alone images supplementing the issue's theme on the sheet or pane.
