Franz Krommer String Quintet (2 vla) in Bb, Op. 25

Submitted by Wanda Horwege 9/24/03:

I too have purchased a number of works from Merton Music and have found some gems amongst them. The latest is the string quintet (2 vla) in B flat, Op. 25 by F. Krommer. The parts are a little difficult to read, and we had to add bar numbers, but as pointed out by others, this is noted in the catalog. The newer computer typeset parts are wonderfully easy to read. It was fantastic to find so many works for this combination in the Merton catalog. Our quintet is working through several others from the list which we obtained recently. Any suggestions from list members for other delightful repertoire for 2 viola quintet (besides Mozart, Beethoven, Dvorak, Brahms, Vaughan Williams, etc.) would be gratefully received.

Epilogue (1/12/04): We have tried several other quintets from the Merton catalog and the Krommer still stands as our favorite to date.
