Clouds #1

The daiza for "Roots of Clouds #1"

In Chinese mythology, it was believed that clouds were born from mountains. Watching how condensed water vapor seems to spew off the top of a mountain even though there aren’t any other clouds in the area, it would not be hard for a viewer in the valley to imagine that the clouds come from mountains. Since the mountain is composed of rock, the poetic image of rocks as the "Roots of Clouds" seems appropriate. This rock is very much the representation of a large thunderhead type cloud (Although a friend refers to it as my “cauliflower stone”)

I found the stone in a thrift shop (of all places!) along with its other half. Someone had attempted to saw through it in several places then obviously finished the job by breaking it the rest of the way.

This is the 'Sister' stone to "Roots". It is the other half of the origional quartz bolder.

I was inspired by the Chinese ‘Southern Style’ of stand, that includes representational motifs and ‘open work’ carving. This is my first attempt at this style.

The wood is puduk, a very red -orange colored wood with a hard tight grain. That is the natural color of the wood.
