This would be the space normally reserved for resumés and "artist statements". We decided to forego that kind of thing in favor of a more informal, collective approach. Our work speaks for itself and, of course, needs to be seen in it's actuality. But the internet does give us an unprecedented audience with which to share our intent, aesthetic viewpoint and sense of reality, if only via these "virtual" means.
As any artist will tell you, exhibition opportunities are scarce, often politically motivated and very draining, both emotionally and financially. They are also a terrible distraction from the work of making art. It is an exciting development to be able to create and control our own exhibitions "on-line".
Space and time are the two things artists need most; a website is like an almost a miraculous gift of space, but the time required to pull it all together does seem to attenuate any advantage. This is our first attempt and we welcome your response.
Like most artists, we support our art rather than the other way around. Until recently, Agnes does freelance design work in the city. Tom does construction, art handling and installation. Our personal histories comprise a variety of occupations from welder to registered nurse. Tom earned a degree in printmaking at Cal State Long Beach.
By the time we met, we were both practicing artists and it seemed as though we were perpetually setting up a studio somewhere. We have been 20 years in the same building now, and are preparing to move on with mixed emotions. Our new studio promises us each a lot more space to make art as well as to show it. This is a large building and we are hoping to get the renovation under control before we are too old and tired to do the work; of course, it will never be finished!
The summer of '06 has come and gone and it hardly seems possible we've been working on the Newport building for 10 years, but are still nowhere near picking out paint colors. Over the next couple of years, we expect to complete major repairs to the building so we can start some interior partitions and create useable space.
Construction debris notwithstanding, we have managed to hold exhibitions & recitals, which we hope to continue in subsequent years. It promises to get more interesting as we include guest artists and performers. To find out about the program, please get in touch with us.
