OBSESSION WITH STARS and people who aren't.

I wonder what life would be like without tabloid shows. I wonder what the hosts would do with their lives if they couldn't snoop into the lives of other's. Personally, I can't imagine anything more boring than delving into the personal lives of others, and seemingly doing it with glee. What is the attraction? Is it, "There but for the grace of God go I"? Or is it, "God, I wish I was one of them instead of sitting behind this camera talking about them." I suspect it's the latter. I huge display of "wannabe".

I caught a show discussing Mel Gibson's impending divorce-not because I wanted to, rather because I was in the kitchen doing dishes and it came on in the living room. I only listened for a short time and then switched channels. I don't care that Mel is getting a divorce. I don't care how much money his wife is going to get. I don't care about the reason for the divorce. I don't care...I don't care! Why does anyone care? That is what I don't understand. It's all so boring and voyeuristic; they're a waste of airtime and space. Not to mention a waste of "grey matter."

Are we so disgusted and bored with our own lives that we have to get "involved" in the lives of people we don't know? Maybe we just want to transfer our disgust to something or someone else.

I don't care who is having an affair or getting married. I don't care who is the best looking man or woman on the planet. It's all so superficial. Nor do I care about OctoMom. There is enough dysfunction in the world without having it slammed into our face because a woman who made an insane choice in her life and is now exploiting her children and parents. And now she's going to have a Reality show. Reward for bad behavior I guess. People seem to get rewarded for bad behavior these days. Once upon a time it wasn't like that.

And the other reality shows... like "Housewives of New York City." Now, I must admit I am a little drawn to that show because many moons ago I was a Park Avenue resident and through my parents lived the same life (or I should say, they did), except my parents did not resemble what I see on the show. What I mean is, New York's truly elite would never dream of exposing themselves or family on a Reality show. Chasing a dream to be one of the elite is so ridiculous, and pretending to be of the social stratosphere is even more absurd...pathetic really. I would love to see a Housewives of Brooklyn; actually any "Housewives" that depicts the ordinary wife(gasp!)and her ordinary life (gasp!). No pretenses, no scrambling for the golden egg, no back stabbing and holier than thou attitudes--just women who know how to live and love the simple things in life...and are content. But then I suppose that wouldn't offer an "escape".

These shows aren't "Reality"--they don't even come close, so why bother with them? I'll stick with the Discovery and History channels, Animal Planet and the like. Especially Animal Planet, where the animals are more civilized than reality show stars.
