Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis)
Wow, this plant definitely catches your attention wherever it is growing. This semi-aquatic sends up tall, showy spikes of cardinal red flowers which attract hummingbirds that often fight over their favorite plants. These long-lived perennials seed well and eventually forms wonderful colonies of brilliant scarlet color. Over the years, Cardinal Flower has been much used in homeopathic remedies as it contains numerous alkyloids.
Like the Eastern Columbine, many varieties of Cardinal Flower are found throughout the Eastern U.S, each adapted to its local environment. These plants are often offered for sale in Texas, but it is best to use ones grown from locally collected seed if you want good results. Our reliable seed stock is from the Blanco River around Wimberley, well adapted to our alkaline soil.
Cardinal flower is excellent along soggy creek banks, pond overflow areas, or graywater sites. The plant is extremely deer-resistant.
