Gulf / Brazos Penstemon (Penstemon tenuis) Here's a plant that can fill a bed with a mass of colorful purple flower spikes every Spring. The Gulf Penstemon, also know as Brazos Penstemon, is found along the Coastal regions of the state. This hardy native is good for clay soil and can handle areas that have poor drainage. It likes partial shade but does well in sunny spots that get regular irrigation or runoff. The plant naturalizes readily. After the blooming season, Gulf Penstemon returns to an attractive rosette form that usually stays green year round. Gulf/Brazos penstemon is deer-resistant.
