Golden-Ball Lead Tree (Leucaena retusa) This is an excellent small tree for our area, especially suited for providing light shade with a tropical look. Leaves are a soft green and have a slightly weeping aspect. In May, the plant is absolutely covered with 1" bright yellow puffs, followed by 3-5" seed pods. The tree is fairly slow growing in the first 2-3 years, then quickly shoots up to 15-18'. Although it is a very tough plant, Golden-Ball Lead Tree must be protected from deer who will ruthlessly browse new growth.
