Lindheimer Shield Fern (Thelypteris kunthii var. lindheimeri)
Found along rocky limestone seeps, this Hill Country variety of the widespread Southern Shield Fern adds a classic touch to pond areas, shady yards and understory plantings. It differs from the "mother" form in that it is shorter in height, it stands 12" -- and is heavily rhizomatous. It is also capable of withstanding extreme drought by remaining dormant until the rains return. Lindheimer Shield Fern is deer-resistant.
