Mexican Feather Grass/Wire Grass (Stipa tenuissima)

Mexican Feather Grass/Wire Grass (Stipa tenuissima)

Native to the Trans-Pecos, this popular bunchgrass thrives in poor soil and full sun. Mexican Feather Grass has a very fine texture and a seed head that appears as a soft blond haze above the foilage. Each clump lives 2-3 years but leaves 3-5 seedlings in its wake. As with most stipas, the spear-like seeds can be a nuisance in fabric, animal coats, etc.

While original collections from west Texas were especially susceptible to high humidity and dew, the grass has had fifteen years to adapt to weather conditions in central Texas. Our plants are grown from seeds collected from area plantings and are reasonably toughened up to deal with unusually wet weather. However, for best longivity always plant in full sun in an area with good drainage.

Mexican Feather Grass is deer resistant.
