Michele
Macrakis, a Rhode Island School of Design graduate started her
career as a Fulbright (ITT)
Fellow to the Island of
Crete in Greece, traveling around the island with her
motorcycle and 4x5 camera to document the landscape and people
; especially the vineyards. She soon gained recognition
for her high quality work and landed her first job at the Greek
magazine: ENA, as a photojournalist. Clients including the
President of Greece, Greek
Archaologist Yiannis Sakellarakis, Hoteliers Eliana and Spiros
Kokotas et al... After that she went international working
for such publications as : Time, Newsweek, NYT's and Reuters....Becoming
the Athens correspondent for Gamma
Presse Images in Paris. She has worked
as a still photogrpher on such movies as Red
Ants and Lord Elgin and some Stones of No value, the Minoans..et
al. After years working with journalists she later became
Managing Editor for the Nelles Guide to the Island
of Crete revisiting some of the places she had already been
to and discovering new ones. She returned to the states
to retrain as a Web Designer, a field she still experiments in.
Along with trying the new digital
technologies in photography. Working for
MIT's Hypermedia Teaching Facility on a number of projects.
All this type of work has led her to the practice of Yoga.
She also interns in the Film department at the Museum of
Fine Arts with an interest in Film
theory.
She divides her time between Cambridge and Athens.
Experience/Skills:
10+ years photography experience, incuding 5 years photojournalism,
2+ years Digital photography, 2+years project management, 4+
years of design experience including 2+ years of Internet Design (including
user interface design and graphic design) and information design experience;
I understand the constraints/opportunities unique to
the web as a medium for design;
strong working knowledge of Dreamweaver and
Photoshop.
