 Cretan cooking is a blend of Greek, Roman and Byzantium traditions interacting within a relatively isolated region for over 2,000 years. In the course of these centuries Arabs, Slavs, Anatolian Greeks, Venetians and Turks have all lived for considerable amounts of time on the island.

Until very recent times the diet of the cretan people was very distinctive and many ancient recipes remain a jealously guarded secret.
