Lost in Cyberspace?

Introduction Session 3 Session 6
Session 1 Session 4 Session 7
Session 2 Session 5 Session 8

Introduction

Are you reading a paper copy of this?  By the end of Session 1, you should be able to find the online copy and read it there.  Reading online will help you to practice what you learn in class.  In addition, reading online should promote better comprehension because the material was organized with the idea that it would be read online.  The web address is:

The easy way to find this outline on the web: go to charitywebsites.org and take the Lost in Cyberspace? link.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Meet the PC Level 1 or equivalent.

Communicate with family and friends, go shopping, get the best airline ticket prices, track stocks and other investments, and check out the auctions using Mozilla Firefox. This class will teach you various aspects of the Internet and how to find interesting and informative sites on the World Wide Web using Avenidas' DSL connection. By the end of this course you will be able to: (1) Search for information on the World Wide Web; (2) send and receive email; (3) determine what is "safe" and what isn't (4) identify a handful of excellent sites that can help you with reference, travel, shopping, research and investments.

I strongly recommend The Rough Guide to the Internet by Peter Buckley and Duncan Clark.  However, the twelfth edition was issued before Internet Explorer version 7 came out.  Therefore, I am not requiring the book.  Since you may not have a book, here is a page to help you with Terminology.

The sessions follow this outline: (1) Getting Online, (2) Surfing the World Wide Web, (3) Searching the Web, (4) Sending & Receiving Email, (5) Email Attachments, (6) Shopping on the Web, (7) Online Security, and (8) Students' Choice.
