2002 — 2004 (no trapping)

2005 — 2006 (trapping)

La Mirada Regional had a dozen successful bluebird boxes in 1999 before house sparrows took over the trail of 1-holed boxes.  During 2001, the local Audubon club struggled against house sparrows for 7 remaining boxes and ended up taking all the boxes down.  Thirteen bluebirds fledged during 2001.  Susan Bulger (pictured) and I reopened the park in 2002 by offering  2-Holed Mansions (boxes with an escape hole).

2001:  Standard 1-Holed Boxes = 13 WEBL Fledged

2002:  Mansions (2-Holes) =  38 WEBL Fledged

2003:  Bluebird Fledges increased to 59

2004:  Bluebird Fledges increased to 60

2005:  Bluebird Fledges increased to 100

2006:  Bluebird Fledges dropped to about 69

Susan can be reached at: suebulger@gmail.com

2002 with Mansions:    A few boxes were usurped by house sparrows with some eggs lost, and a clutch of chicks was attacked and killed by house sparrows.   Whenever House Sparrow nests/eggs are found in a box, they are immediately destroyed.   No trapping was done and fledges almost tripled from 2001 to 2002.

2003 Extra Boxes Added:   DeSparrowization Zone:   Homeowners along Alicante are heavily feeding sparrows and providing dozens of nestboxes with a new Purple Martin box added in 2003 which House Sparrows are using.  Therefore, we put up a bank of nestboxes between homeowners and park along Alicante to the corner of Manzanares as a DeSparrowization zone.  House Sparrow activity greatly increased during 2003 with the availability of extra boxes.   Logs notes of contiguous boxes are being grouped into tables to provide an overview of WEBL/HOSP interaction.  No trapping was done and fledges continued to increase.

2004:   House Sparrow problems persisted and Bluebird fledges remained about the same as the previous year.  No trapping.

So many extra boxes have now been added/changed  that it is no longer possible to organize the logs into manageable weekly logs.   Fierce competition from House Sparrows continued.

2005:  Extra Boxes are Removed and Trapping Begins:

Fledges increased to about 100.  There were many variables (excess box removals, etc.) in addition to trapping, which may have contributed to the change.

2006:  Trapping Continues:

Number of Bluebirds fledged drops to 69 Bluebirds fledged.  There were, again, many variables.   That concludes the experiment because the park is being converted to a swimming pool "park" and the golf course across the street will be used as the future Bluebird trail.
