Weblinks for Writers

NOVEL PUBLISHERS:

Ace/Putnam: Publishers of Samuel R. Delany, Philip K. Dick, Ursula K. Le Guin, Laurrell K. Hamilton, William Gibson, and others. Ace is an imprint of Penguin Putnam, Inc.

Baen Books: Publishers of Frederick Pohl, Charles Sheffield, Roger Zelazny, Robert Asprin, and others. Baen Books publishes only SF and Fantasy. They accept unsolicited manuscripts, and their submission guidelines are here.

DAW Books: DAW Books was the first ever devoted exclusively to science fiction and fantasy. It remains so. They accept unsolicited manuscripts, and their submission guidelines are here.

Del Rey Books: Publishers of Terry Brooks, Anne Mcaffrey, Orson Scott Card, and others. Try as I might, I couldn't find a whole lot of useful info for the aspiring author. If you do, let me know.

Tor/Orb: An imprint of Tom Doherty Associates, LLC, Tor publishes Robert Jordan, Nancy Kress, Terry Goodkind, Lawrence Watt-Evans, Steven Brust, and others. They do accept unsolicited manuscripts, and their guidelines are here.

SHORT STORY MARKETS:
(THIS IS A SMALL COLLECTION OF SITES.
A MORE EXTENSIVE LIST CAN BE FOUND
AT RALAN'S AND OTHER SITES.)

Analog: Analog is a professional science fiction market with an equal focus on science fact.

Asimov's: Another professional science fiction market, Asimov's has been know to accept a rare fantasy story once in a while. An added bonus to the site is the forums where you can sometimes catch useful comments made by that magazine's authors and editors.

Black Gate: Black Gate is a professional market primarily for adventure-oriented fantasy

Cemetery Dance: One of the few professional print markets for horror that i've been able to find, Cemetery Dance is also a publisher of many horror books.

Fantasy & Science Fiction: Founded in 1949, F&SF is one the longest running professional markets for fantasy fiction.

Realms of Fantasy: Like F&SF, Realms of Fantasy is a professional market for a wide range of fantasy sub-genres, but doesn't publish any science fiction. As an added bonus, if you've recently submitted a story to them and want to know if it's been read, you can check the slush pile here.

Sci-Fi.com's Sci Fiction: The fiction side of the Sci-Fi channel's web portal, Sci Fiction has, I believe, the highest paying rate out there for science fiction short stories. Which is enough to blunt the edge off of my unfounded bias against web markets.

Strange Horizons: Strange Horizons is another web market. While their rates are not as high as Sci Fiction, it has good word of mouth going in it's favor.

Weird Tales: A professional market for both horror and fantasy, Weird Tales also says they accept some stories that just don't seem to fit anywhere else. Hmmm... Sounds like a challenge to me!

WRITERS ASSOCIATIONS:

HWA: The Horror Writers Association.

SFWA: The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.

WORKSHOPS:
(This section currently under construction so some text may be missing.)

Clarion: The original Clarion workshop is a six-week intensive fiction workshop held annually at Michigan State University.

Clarion West: A branch from the original Clarion workshop, but is instead held annually at Seattle Central Community College.

Critters: An online community of writers, Critters is a free workshop. Even if you don't want to join, they have a lot of good information for aspiring authors.

Odyssey: Held in Manchester, New Hampshire, the Odyssey workshop is a week long event for developing writers.

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Workshop:

Viable Paradise: An intensive, week-long workshop workshop in writing and selling commercial science fiction and fantasy. It is heal each year in Martha's Vinyard, during the fall.

Writer's of the Future: Typically seen as more of a quarterly contest, than a workshop. However, if you place in the contest, they fly you to the location of the awards ceremony and give you a free, week-long workshop. And for that price, I can ignore all that Scientology stuff.

Oregon Coast:

MESSAGE BOARDS:

There are many publishers and magazines that host message boards on their websites. They are an excellent place to lurk for information, or drop by and leave an appreciative message for an author if you like their work.

PAGES OF INTEREST:

Ralan.com: Ralan's site is the reason I didn't want to include a lot of market information. She has an extensive list of professional and semi-professional markets. She also includes statistics on the markets response times.

SFF Net: This is a very interesting site. SFF Net has a lot of good information for beginning writers. It also has forums for most markets -- both novel and short fiction. An excellent place for market research.

Tangent Online: This site provides fiction reviews of stories published in most, if not all of the subscription magazines.

Trinoc*coN: The RTP Speculative Fiction Conference, Trinoc is known to feature panels, lectures, and signings by authors and editors such as Orson Scott Card, Jim Baen, Jack McDevitt, Jim Grimsley, and others. It's an excellent time to speak to big-name authors at their most approachable!

Write Hemisphere: Courtesy of Scott Reilly, the man who brought us J-Walker, Write-Hemisphere tracks down all the juicy bits of gossip, market news, and other information important to writers -- so you don't have to!

PEOPLE OF INTEREST:

Just a small list of people who either have message boards, journals, or write fiction that I enjoy reading. If a resource is in red, it means I couldn't find it for that person. If you know something I don't, feel free to educate me.
