Yoga deeply impacts mind and consciousness, as we work with body and breath. Breath work alone helps to calm and quiet the mind and nerves. ( When we say "nerves" in yoga, it usually means both the meridians of the energetic system and the nervous system in general). We relax more and sleep better. Since body and mind are so connected, any yoga practice helps to quiet and focus the mind as well as stimulate a feeling of positive energy and well being. It can help to reduce depression. At the same time some people may experience catharsis, just as in conventional psychotherapy. This is quite normal and is considered to be purification. The practice can also be specifically directed toward psychotherapy as in working with depression, anxiety, and various mental/emotional difficulties. Our perspective changes and we become much better able to deal with real - world problems.

Yoga is very much a spiritual practice which recognizes a higher power and a divinity within. It has much in common with transpersonal therapies that do the same. However it doesn't depend on anyone's theories and more importantly, is not dependant on a therapist's interpretations. It is a direct experience of one's higher potential, pure and unique to  each individual. Each person can process the experience in their own way, either within the framework of yoga philosophy or not.

For most of us yoga is slow and steady. It takes ongoing practice and patience to experience lasting change. It also involves changes in values and lifestyle . And it works!
