Site Of Fire's Start
This is the site where the Carthage fire originated. Clustered
on the western bank of the Black River were a number of small mills and
factories including the Eaton Sash and Blind Factory where the fire is believed
to have started, the Meyer and Ross Furniture Factory, Harvey Farrar's tub
factory, Revel Tannery and other wood-based industries.
Myer and Ross Furniture Factory or Eaton Sash and Blind: this
old photo states it is Myer and Ross, but further states that it is where
the fire of 1884 began. Historically, it has been agreed that the fire began
at the Eaton Factory. As they were next door to each other on the west bank
of the Black River, and were both destroyed, it probably is a moot point.
The 2nd Meyer and Ross Furniture Factory. and Shop. This replaced
the building butned in 1884. This building burned in 1895 and was replaced
by a brick building later sold to Carthage Sulphite Co.
This is the 4th Myer and Ross building. Later sold to the LeRay
Paper Corp.
Photo taken from the east bank of the Black River shortly after
the fire. Two estates are seen in the background: the home of the Mason
family is on the left, and the house know known as the Stalker house, and
currently occupied by the Babbett family is seen on the right.
The area where some of the mills stood as seen today. Some islands are
visable in the background.
Student idea of burning mill or factory.
