The Opera House, located across the street from the Brownell house, previous had been the Methodist church, which was built in 1840. It was the location of these churches that gave Church Street its name. Currently, there are no churches on the street, but St. James Catholic Church is at the head of the Church Street intersection.
Research has not been able to pinpoint the exact site, but somewhere
on Church Street the Town Hall was situated. The building also had access
from North School Street. It housed the fire department's equipment on the
ground floor and the town's offices above. Of course, many valuable records
were lost when that building burned.
