Where the fire started at the West end of the old state dam on the west bank of the Black River is shown with its ruined industrial plants.

In the right foreground appear the standing outer walls of the ruined Baptist church in the desolated area on the west side of State Street. This picture is taken looking southeast and shows leveled to the ground fully a block of buildings beyond the church.

Looking southward along State Street from North Washington Street may be seen a striking example of the destruction. For approximately one block depicted here the buildings are seen swept clean down to their foundations.

Untouched by flames , the Catholic Church is seen standing in relief at the left background in sharp contrast are the stark ruins in the foreground. The picture was taken looking eastward.
