The old Carthage Academy caught fire in 1884. It was located on the corner of Fulton and North School Streets next to Chuckie Brownell's house. The new Elks club was (later) built on the school site. The school was made of wood and easily caught fire. It was red and it was tall.

When the flames were by the school, classes were dismissed. The kids ran from the school in terror. The school was destroyed after the kids left. The school in Carthage wasn't there anymore. I think all the kids were happy that the school burnt down. There was nothing left of the school after the fire.

Chuckie's house isn't there anymore and there isn't any sign of the school. After the school burnt, they used the Methodist church for a school house. Soon, they had another school built. The new Academy was built on the same site.
