The Brownell home, where Charles Brownell lived as a boy, was located on this site next door to the school building. Many years later the building was used for home economics classes for the Carthage High School. This was discontinued after centralization took place and the new school was built on the martin Street Road in 1960. The house was demolished sometime after that.

The spot where the Brownell home once stood. We have so far been unable to locate a picture of the home, which survived the fire.
Editor's Notes: the Chuckie mentioned frequently by the children is Charles Brownell, the son of a local surveyor for the LeRay land office in Carthage. This family lived next to the Carthage Academy in 1884. Chuckie was 11 at the time and his sister taught at the school. In his memoirs, published as They Called Me Chuckie, he vividly recalls the fire, the panic, the valiant efforts to save the village, and watching Carthage burn from the safety of high rocks north of town. Neighbors gathered at the Brownell home, which being made of brick, was less likely to burn, and through dogged determination (and some luck) were able to save the house and stop the fire from spreading in that direction.
