The Carthage Academy was located on this site which was the location of the public school for many years thereafter. Charles Brownell was a student in this school at the time of the 1884 fire and his sister taught there. The Carthage ELKS Club presently occupies this site.

This shows the school that was rebuilt the year after the fire. If you look carefully, you can read the year "1885" on the arch just under the inscription "Public School".
