Houston gun violence incidents reports from 1999

Following is a list of the gun violence incidents (deaths & injuries) that occurred in the Houston area in 1999. Handguns may make people feel safer, but they unleash incredible violence in our community. The rest of the developed world has figured out how to make people safe without handguns. As a result, they have very few gun deaths and injuries each year, unlike the list that follows.

November 1999

Body of an unidentified woman appeared to be in her late 20s, was found dumped in a garbage receptable in the 11000 block of South Sam Houston Parkway at Sabo. Two men were with the man and woman when he began playing with a gun. It accidentally discharged, killing the woman. The man ,24, turned himself in to the police for questioning. (11/2)

A 16 year old boy has been charged with carrying a .380-caliber semiautomatic pistol at Bellaire High School located in the 5100 block of Maple where he went to sign papers transferring him to an alternative school. On Valerie street, police found in the vehicle the boy had been driving a .22-caliber semiautomatic handgun, a 12-gauge shotgun, 2.5 ounces of marijuana and two knit caps with eye holes. (11/6)

A man ,36, fired a shot in a standoff with police who was called because the man was assaulting his girlfriend, 36, who was pregnant, in the 6700 block of Nordling. No names were released. (11/9)

Fernando Valles, (21), was shot to death on Friday, 11/5, in a nightclub in the 1300 block of Sheffield at about 11:00 p.m. An unknown man had been dancing with Valles’ ex-girlfriend and the two men began fighting. The man then shot Valles multiple times before fleeing. (11/9)

One man was shot to death and one critically wounded during a robbery in an apartment in the 6700 block of Peerless in southeast Houston. The two intruders demanded drugs and money, then shot one victim in the chest and the other in the face. Police need information. (11/10/99)

Jack Anthony Ross, 24-year old man, was shot in the face in the 7300 block of Rhobell near a parked car. Ross had gone to meet his nephew. Police are still looking for the gunman (11/12)

Shawn Albert Pearson, 25, and Nancy Pearson, 27, died in an apparent murder-suicide in their home in the 16100 block of Wemyss Bay Road. Both had been shot. (11/12 &11/13)

Lawrence R. Smith, 46, HPD officer, shot and killed Jaime Dominguez, 45, who authorities believe was waiting to ambush Marta Dominguex, his estranged wife. The officer and Dominguez exchanged several shots. Dominguez was dead at the scene.

A female armoured courier was robbed after making at pickup of money at a Wal-Mart store located in the 7100 block of Texas 6 and FM 529. No one was hurt; however the gunman discharged a weapon on his way out of the store. (11/13)

Juan Carlos Mendez, 36, of the 7000 block of Greenville was shot to death after he refused to give his wallet to three gunmen at the La Chamba Lounge in the 700 block of Harbor. They demanded money from the barmaid and patrons and fled after the
shooting. (11/13/99) (11/14)

Antoine Burnett, 25, of the 7600 block of Creekbend in southwest Houston, and two passengers were fired upon by a passenger in a white Chevrolet Astrovan with blue stripes. One shot hit Burnett in the chest. Police need information. (11/13/99)

Precinct 1 Deputy Constable Matthew McCord shot and wounded Martin Cortez Gonzales, 22, at 2700 Berry Road after McCord was pulled over for a traffic violation. Gonzales tried to escape forcing McCord to shoot during the struggle. (11/15)

Jeffrey Lyunn McCardle, 18 of the 4100 block of Leffingwell was slain. His brother, Jason McCardle, 17, and Jason Nelson, 18, were wounded. The shooting broke out in the 700 block of Eubanks at Irvington and appeared to be a gang-related retaliation for the slaying of a man the night before. Police need information. (11/17) (11/18)

Alonzo Samuel, 24, a prison guard, is charged with killing a co-worker, Janet Lavern Peters, 22, when he mistook her for a burglar. Samuel lived in an apartment in the 12200 block of Fondren in southwest Houston. Ms. Peters of 8000 block of Creekbend was DOA at Ben Taub Hospital. A 12-gauge shotgun was the murder weapon. (11/17)

Five Houston narcotics officerfs shot it out with Roland Carranza Jimeniz,37, a bartender at the Damian Ice House in the 3300 block of East Lockwood. No one was hit. Jiminez was charged with possession of cocaine and aggravated assault on a public servant. (11/20)

Two officers were wounded in foiling of a home invasion in the 2500 block of Beatty. Police are looking for two young men who fled the scene. Officers J.A. Calley, 30, and S.C. Garcia, 26, was responding to an assault call. Police need information.

Two men were spending the night at a labor camp at 5822 Westpark so they could be first to sign up for work. An argument ensued and the gunman pulled a revolver and shot the victim in the face and chest. (11/23)

Alvino Jaramillo Lopez, 20, was shot several times in the back at Texas Steel Fabricators, 5722 Edward. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say Lopez was killed during what may have been a family squabble with his brother-in-law. (11/26)

The gunshot victim, a Hispanic male, was found in a wooded area in the 1000 block of Rayford Road after police received a call. Identity of the victim was not released. (11/28)

Julio Cesar Segura, 29, died of a gunshot wound in the abdomen. His brother was badly beaten. Police received a home invasion call at 10100 block of Westview. A vehicle with at least two men inside sped out of the complex. (11/30)

June 1999

A teenage woman was shot in the head by a gunman with a semiautomatic weapon during an attempted carjacking. She died the following day.

Woman slain in her home; apparently robbery was the motive. Her son checked on her who had not seen her in two days. Several items including her 1985 Buick was missing.

A man was charged with murder in the shooting of a woman who had asked him to move out of her east Houston home two days earlier. He had threatened to kill her many times.

A man was found dead in his southwest apartment. It was determined that he died from a gunshot to the head. He was last seen talking to a Hispanic male outside of his apartment.

A Conroe man shot a teenager in self-defense outside a local residence. Police said the men were arguing over a woman. The teenager died the next day in a Conroe hospital.

Husband who killed the mother of his three children and wounded her paralyzed grandfather was convicted of capital murder. He used a .357 magnum gun. The two had an on-again off-again relationship in her grandfather's apartment in southeast Houston.

A 36 year old woman is charged with the slaying of her boyfriend in their home in Dickinson. She grabbed a pistol after he struck her during an argument.

Police are hunting five men for the shooting death of a man at his northeast Houston home for an undetermined reason.

A man was shot by police after he fired on officers outside a building in the Heights area. The man who was shot three times was apparently upset because of marital problems.

Two men died after a gunfight erupted outside a southwest Houston apartment complex. No reason was given. Investigators are questioning the brother of a dead man and the other men in the van.

Officers killed a man who tried to ram them during a standoff at an Astrodome area street. The man had been charged with the shooting death of a woman during a domestic dispute at her home in the east Houston area. SWAT officers fired several shots from their .223 caliber rifles.

The owner of a washateria was found shot to death and robbed in her northeast Houston business.

Two men involved in a dispute were shot and killed during a gunfight outside a home in southwest Houston. The case was referred to a grand july without charges.

A Willis man was charged with murder after he surrendered to police after another man was shot to death in an altercation. Investigators are not sure of the motive.

Houston jazz guitarist found shot to death in his car on a near-southwest Houston street. No motive was given.

Principal of a southwest Houston alternative school for at risk students was found shot to death in his bed. No motive was currently determined.

A man is charged with murder in the shooting of a man in southwest Houston outside the victim's apartment. The murderer remains at large. No motive determined.

Police kills a would-be-robber during a shootout in southwest Houston. The victim was shot in the chest and died in Hermann Hospital.

An off-duty police shot a burglary suspect at a northwest Houston apartment complex. The suspect was charged with assault of a public servant and burglary of a motor vehicle.

A man was fatally shot when he resisted in an armed robbery in northwest Houston.

A call led Houston poilice to the body of a 22 year old man in southeast Houston who had been shot in the head outside of a residence.

A man was shot to death outside a northwest Houston convenience store during a dispute with four other men. No motive was listed.

Playing with a knife collection leads to a boy's death. Ramirez believed to be between 18 and 20 was charged with the murder; he was the owner of the collection.

A Pasadena man kills wife, then self after she sought a divorce.

Police found a man in his apartment in southwest Houston who had been shot once and stabbed in the chest. Robbery appeared to be the motive since his car and items from his apartment were missing.

A man was shot to death during an argument at an apartment near downtown. The man was shot in the face with a shotgun while visiting a friend. The man became irate and pulled a knife. The friend got his shotgun which accidentally discharged during the confrontation.

A woman shot her husband to death outside a northwest Houston washateria, then surrendered to the police. She did not say why she killed her husband. He was pronounced dead a short time later at Hermann Hospital..

May 1999

March 1999

Francisco Urmana, 43, of the 13000 block of Glenwick was shot several times in the arms, back and chest. He was found in his home by his brother who saw a man fleeing from the scene. Umana later died at Ben Taub hospital. 3-1

A 41-year-old man was shot and critically wounded by Pasadena police officers after he lunged at them with a knife screaming “kill me”. Police were called to the Parkview Village Apartments at 2323 Burke after witnesses called saying the man had chased his wife around the courtyard with a knife. 3-3

A kindergarten teacher, Michael Anthony Smith, 35, was found critically wounded on his living room floor with at least two gunshot wounds to the head. He was found by employees of the Pine Forest Park Apartments after he failed to show up at Kennedy Elementary School. 3-5

The body of an unidentified man was found in the 100 block of Garrotsville. He had been shot in the chest. 3-6

An overnight shooting near a southwest Houston nightclub sent one person to the hospital. It happened near T-Town on Richmond. Gunfire erupted during an altercation. One person was shot in the leg. 3-7

The body of Arvin Hightower, 30, was found shot to death on Karalis and Almeda Genoa near an old rodeo arena. Vernon Lee Brackens, 22, was later charged and arrested for Hightower’s murder. 3-7

A young teen was shot while reportedly trying to break into a skating park on Wade Road in northeast Harris County. Two juveniles were trespassing when the caretaker heard them and investigated. Shots were fired. One juvenile was taken into custody and the other taken to Hermann Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest. 3-10

Police, responding to a domestic dispute in northeast Houston, fired a shot into the leg of a man who they said had stabbed his wife several times. Guadalupe Herrera, 41, was later charged with aggravated assault against his wife. 3-14

A 35-year-old woman was arrested at her home after she called 911 to report shooting her husband, Shawn Hubbard, 37, to death after a night of drinking and arguing. 3-16

Joseph Jerome Carmouche, 17, was found dead in a northeast apartment after an exchange of gunfire with police and a brief standoff after an apparent car jacking. Police said Carmouche’s wound appeared self-inflicted, but an autopsy was ordered. 3-18

Jeanetta Hopkins, 17, was found shot to death outside a west Houston apartment in the 6700 block of Westbranch. Hopkins had been shot in the chest. Police said there was a suicide note, but the gun used in the killing was fifty feet from the body. 3-19

Sheri Rafes, 26, was shot while in her car outside her home in the 9600 block of Oak Thicket. Police said a man fired several shots through the drivers’ side window. Rafes was reported in stable condition in Hermann Hospital. 3-20

Gabriel Salas Quiroz, 21, of 7300 Ashcroft and Julio Mendrano, 22, were during a dispute over a bicycle in the 6550 block of Bissonnet. Quiroz later died and Mendrano was treated for an arm wound. 3-21

Police arrested several teenagers at a local Tinseltown theatre. All are suspect in an overnight shooting. The shooting happened at an apartment complex on Ranchester and Belwood. One person was injured and remains in stable condition. 3-24

Jason Deon Clay, 21, was shot and killed while sitting on a bicycle in the 5700 block of Lost Forest. Witnesses told police they saw a blue car chasing Clay down the street. He turned into an apartment complex and collapsed. He was dead at the scene. 3-28

Telberto G. Contreras, 44, of 8700 Camay was shot and killed outside the El Parais Club by a security guard. The security guard had earlier broken up a confrontation between Contreras and another man. Contreras returned to the club and allegedly pointed a pistol at the guard, who then shot him. 3-28

Ivonne Hernandez, 15, of 4710 Anderson was shot and killed outside the Lambada Club on South Main. A man opened fire during a dispute with two groups of people in the parking lot. Juan Medrano, 17, Oscar Aragon, 18, Mario Gonzales, 23, Jessica Soliz, and Wendy Fernandez, 16, were also wounded, but expected to recover. 3-29

An overnight shooting on Club Creek near Woodfair left one-person dead and several people in custody. No names were released and police have no word on what sparked the shooting. 3-29

Veronica Orozco, 24, was shot in her southwest Houston apartment on Alder in front of her two young children. Police say she was shot at such close range she had gunpowder on her clothes. Orozco remains hospitalized. 3-29

Moses Williams, 32, shot and killed himself during a drinking party with friends. Police say he was playing with a gun and holding it to his head when the fatal shot was fired. 3-31

February 1999

Mark Sonier, 21,was shot in the head and critically wounded while trying to back his vehicle away from would be robbers in the 9200 block of Rhode Island. 2-5

The body of Steve Dwayne Garcia, 34,of 3600 Graham was found in the 600 block of West Bell. He had been shot once in the shoulder. 2-7

A teller at the Bank of America outlet in a Kroger store in the 1700 block of Alexandria was shot in the chest by three masked men who then took his cash. The teller, whose name was not released, is expected to survive. 2-11

A 19-year-old man and his baby son were wounded as the father allegedly broke into a car at a north Houston business. Tremell Ramon Robinson received a bullet wound to the head and the 19-month-old baby was struck in the back with a bullet fragment. Robinson’s common law wife was grazed by a bullet but not seriously hurt. The 53-year-old business owner shot at the car Robinson was driving while trying to get away. The baby and common-law wife were in the car when they were hit by bullets from the business owner’s 22-caliber rifle. 2-10

Fazil Brohi,30,was shot and killed in an apparent home invasion. A man forced his way into Brohi’s apartment in the 7300 block of Corporate. Brohi’s brother shot at the suspect, who was later arrested in his apartment several blocks away. 2-12

An off duty police officer shot and killed two men when they tried to rob a northwest Houston check cashing store in the 5600 block of Gessner. The robbers came in brandishing weapons and started beating off duty officer Joe Shackett and the storeowner. The names of the two robbers were not released. 2-13

Albino Garcia Cuero, 48,was shot and killed at his apartment in the 6200 block of west Bellfort by several men who burst through his front door posing as police officers. A friend who was with Cuero at the time was uninjured. 2-15

Cruz Torres, 15,was shot and killed while trying to intervene in a couple’s argument in the 3800 block of Weslow. Police said a man and woman were arguing when the teen became involved. The boyfriend went to his car, retrieved a pistol and shot Torres several times. 2-15

Desdreian Charles Grant, 24,of the 3400 block of Elysian was shot to death outside a northeast Houston restaurant where a large group of men were gambling. One of the men opened fire with a handgun and shot Gant in the head. 2-16

Shane Burnheardt, 21,of the 1700 block of Ojeman was shot in the back as he drove through a southwest Houston neighborhood. He was listed in critical condition. 2-17

Zachary Deone Pickrom, 17,of the 8600 block of Victorian Village was accidentally shot in the chest by a 15-year-old friend who was showing Pickrom a gun. Pickrom later died. 2-17

Albert Leonard Todd, 56,of the 13100 block of Lima was shot and killed as he drove through a southwest Houston neighborhood. Police found Todd inside his van with a gunshot wound to the head. 2-18

A man was fatally shot in the stomach while talking with someone in the parking lot of a southwest Houston nightclub. The victim’s name was withheld pending notification of kin. 2-21

A southwest Houston apartment complex security guard, Gabriel Bradshaw, shot and killed Frederick Hubbard, 32,when Hubbard refused to turn down his loud music, became irate, and chased Bradshaw. 2-21

Charlotte Jones Holland, 67,shot and killed her husband, Gene 74, then killed herself in the kitchen of their residence in the 13200 block of Richmond. The couple had been having marital problems. 2-26

An unidentified man was fatally shot outside a south Houston motel. The unidentified man was dressed as a woman. Police are looking for a woman seen talking to the man just before the incident. 2-27

William Antonio Guerrero was shot in the head and wounded in a parking lot in southeast Houston. Guerrero was struggling with a would be robber at the time he was shot. 2-28

January 1999

James Hudson, 21, of the 2100 block of Higgins, shot and wounded a visiting friend, then shot and killed himself. The friend, whose name was not available, was listed in good condition. 1-4

Leslie Pendergrass, 50, was fatally shot by a friend, Jimmy Lee Ferguson, 58, after an argument at Ferguson's home. 1-6

A Mexican National, Abel Alfaro, 24, was shot and killed during a robbery attempt in the laundry room of apartments in the 10100 block of Westview. The two robbers, identified as two black men, fled the scene. 1-7

A man was shot outside a Southeast Houston apartment complex. The man, whose name was not released, died of at least one gunshot wound to the face. 1-7

Caroline Kirwan, 55, shot herself to death inside her apartment in the 8700 block of Hammerly. Kirwan was reportedly distraught because she found out she was going to be evicted. Swat officers tried to coax Kirwan out of her apartment to no avail. 1-7

Reynaldo Sanchez Ancira, 42, is accused of killing Juan Quiroz, 52. Quiroz was shot in the chest while talking to Ancira in the 5600 block of Chaffin. Police are asking for help with information on Ancira's whereabouts. 1-8

John D. Hackett, 75, has been charged with murder in the shooting death of his son John, 35. The shooting occurred at their house in the 3400 block of Los Angeles during a work-related argument. 1-9

Manuel Balles, 42, was shot to death after an argument at a home in the 400 block of Moody. Police are searching for the suspect. 1-10

Two men were shot to death at an apartment complex n the 8400 block of Hearth. The men, whose names were withheld, were in a car in the parking lot. Not motive was known. 1-12

Brian Steverson, 22, was shot to death as he walked with an unidentified man in the 3300 block of Wichita. Police had no other information about the killing. 1-13

A man was shot and critically wounded in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 9200 block of Bissonnet Shortly after he and his girlfriend parked, a man with a gun approached the car and demanded money. The girlfriend told the officers her boyfriend acted as if he knew the man, and gave him the money. The robber put his weapon up and shot the man in the stomach. The victim's name was not released. 1-13

J.C. Allen, 43, was shot to death at his apartment complex in the 6200 block of Antoine. Investigators say Allen was asleep when a woman knocked on his apartment door and told him she accidentally hit his car. Allen went out to check the damage and a man shot him. 1-14

Belinda Trace Temple, 30, was found shot to death in her home at 22500 Round Valley Drive. Her husband, David Mark Temple came home with the couple's three-year-old son and found a broken window near the rear entrance of the home. He called the constable's office then returned home and found his wife's body. She had been shot in the back of the head at close range with a shotgun. Belinda Trace Temple was a teacher at Katy High School and eight months pregnant at the time of her death. 1-13

A Southeast Houston resident shot a home invader to death with the victim's own gun. Four men kicked in the front door of a home in the 6600 block of Myrtle. The resident hit one of the invaders in the arm with a crowbar knocking the gun from his hand, then picked up the gun and shot the man to death. The other intruders fled. No names have been released. 1-15

Andrew Short, 32, has been charged with the shooting death of Dimitrius Grayson, 31, outside a Southeast Houston nightclub.
Grayson was shot by Short when he attempted to leave the club with Short's common-law wife. 1-18

Jose Lorenzo Euceda, 31, was shot and killed in the parking lot of an apartment complex at 8308 Gulf Freeway. Euceda was standing with two other men when two armed men approached them. Euceda was shot while the two armed men were robbing
the man Euceda was standing with. 1-18

Kara Crawford, 29, was shot to death at her apartment in the 7000 block of West Gulf Bank. Her boyfriend, whose name was not released was also shot and wounded. Dennis Luhon, 43, her ex-boyfriend is being charged with the murder. 1-16

Latisha Johnson, 6, was shot in the leg while riding her bicycle in the 4200 block of Wilmington. She was treated and released from Hermann Hospital. Police are looking for the man who shot her while arguing with another group. 1-19

Juan Duarte, 16, of the 200 block of Lenox and Velio Torres, 17 of the 200 block of Edgewood were both shot and wounded at a Jack-in-the Box in the 1200 block of Wayside. Duarte and Torres began fighting with a group of men who had been harassing them. Duarte is listed in critical condition. Torres was treated and released from Ben Taub Hospital. 1-20

Sheryl Sue Seymour, 40, was shot and killed by a police officer after swing a butcher knife at police and paramedics and ranting incoherently. Seymour had called paramedics to take her to a psychiatric facility. 1-21

Larry G. Rogers, 29, was shot in the head during a disturbance outside the Shepherd Inn bar in the 4000 block of Hare. The gunmen and two other people fled. 1-25

Tommy Lee Penick, 16, was shot and killed and his friend, Alan Todd Gregory, 18, wounded, as they sat on a swing at a home in the 900 block of Ashland. Juan Carlos Moreno. 20, told investigators he shot Pennick and Gregory in retaliation
for his friends being attacked at an earlier party. 1-25

Apolinar Delgado, 32, a taxi cab driver was found shot to death behind a church at 6415 Goldspier. His taxicab was found abandoned five blocks away. Police believe robbery was the motive. 1-25

Jose Guadalupe Duque, 25, was shot to death in a driveby shooting outside a night club in the 6400 block of North Main. Police are searching for Alex Omar Mendez, 25, who will be charged with the murder. 1-25

Two men were found shot to death in a Northeast Houston home in the 4000 block of Linn. A friend passing by noticed the door ajar and went in to investigate. One victim was Gregory Watson, 43, the other's name was withheld. 1-27

Benni Roy Patterson, 28, was shot and killed outside a Southwest Houston restaurant in the 8100 block of South Gessner.
His killer fled in a four-door compact car. 1-27

David Ards, 16, was fatally shot while apparently breaking into a residence in the 1960 block of Atascocita Pines Drive. Ards broke out the front door window of the home and the owner shot him with a shotgun. Ards was naked and appeared to have been on drugs. 1-30

Two men were found shot and dumped along a secluded road in the 13400 block of Karalis, Juan Patino died at Ben Taub Hospital. Francisco Solis Gomez, 23, was dead at the scene. 1-31

Minor Payne Johnson, 26, was critically wounded as he sat in a car at the intersection of West Tidwell and
Wheatley. Two vehicles had stopped near him and shots were fired by a man with a shotgun and another with a pistol. Derrick Lamont Salter, 26 was charged with aggravated assault. 1-31
