Hannah married Ole Vallesater. They homesteaded near Fertile, Minnesota. They had seven children of their own and also raised two foster children. Because so many Vallestaers were arriving from Norway, the Vallesater name was changed to Swenson.

Ole first plowed his homestead with oxen. Bertha was six when he got his first team of horses.

Ole’s father, Grampa Vallesator, was a tailor in Norway. He traveled from house to house over a large area of the country taking measurements and making swallow tail suits for men.
