Seventeen year old Hanna Regine Engelstad emigrated to the United States in 1881. She came with her parents, Sofia and Christopher Englestad and her two brothers and two sisters. Hanna was the oldest child, born on July 31, 1864 at Vikersund, Norway. Minnesota was their goal and Fillmore county was their first stop. Christopher and one of the boys headed North to Beltrami in Polk County to locate and file on a homestead there.

Hannah missed her family, friends and life in Norway. Most of all she missed the singing and fun she experienced there. Following are several letters she wrote to her cousin Emma and her Aunt. One was written before leaving Norway, the other from America. The letters were translated from Norwegian to English by Kordual Erickson Holmvik.
