WINDOWS FAX AND SCAN

Windows has had elements pertaining to faxing and scanning for quite some time, but in Vista you now have an integrated tool containing both built right into the operating system. This is described rather fully here:

Features Explained Windows Fax and Scan

Windows Fax and Scan is available only in the Business, Ultimate and Enterprise editions of Windows Vista, not the Home versions. This feature makes it quite simple to send and receive faxes, and scan documents, as well as share them with others. There are several set categories and folders into which you can organize your faxes or scans, and you can also customize the available options. You can have several user accounts, each of which has its own identity for sending and receiving faxes.

Sending and receiving faxes is very similar to sending and receiving e-mail, and indeed the window resembles that for Windows Mail (which is the Vista equivalent of what was formerly called Outlook Express in earlier versions of Windows) rather closely. To send a fax, you can use the built-in Contacts address book, or you can type in the fax number. Next, after typing in the Subject and any notes you want to have on the fax cover sheet, you attach the document to be faxed, in the same way as you can add an attachment to an e-mail in Windows Mail.

The scanning part of this feature lets you click once to scan documents or images from either locally connected or network connected scanners. (Previous versions of Windows only allowed you to make use of locally connected scanning devices.) You can adjust settings for a document to be scanned (things such as the proper page size and resolution and color) and store them as a scan profile. There is a Live Preview feature that you can use to see exactly how it will appear on your computer. You can also set up routing lists for scanned documents (click the File menu and then click on Set Up Routing), where you can specify e-mail addresses or network shares that will receive the scanned documents. You can then right click the icon for e-mail or faxing, which causes an e-mail or fax template to be displayed with the scanned document attached.
