Technical Literacy Project

The East Bay Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication sponsors a Technical Literacy Project at two schools in Oakland, California: Montera Middle School and Fremont High School.

Today's students bring a different sensitivity to the classroom than previous generations. A traditional literature-based curriculum is not as successful in teaching reading and writing skills to this new group of students. Today's urban high school population have been trained by a television culture, many learning their ABC's watching Sesame Street.

Technical writing helps to strengthen analytical thinking and offers teachers and students a way to understand language in terms of today's technological world. Moreover, as computers become a central part of our world, learning how to communicate about and with technology becomes a requirement.

As the Outreach Coordinator of the Project, I have developed the following lessons for teaching technical literacy to seventh and eighth grade students.
