1. Song with a day of the week in the title.
"Friday On My Mind" - The Easybeats. Of all the "waiting for the weekend" songs ever made, this one is the best ever. Ever.
2. A song you disliked as a youngster that you like now.
"When Doves Cry" - Prince. Never was much of a Prince fan as a youngster, but somewhere around 87 or so something clicked and the genius was (finally) pretty obvious to me.
3. Sellout - song from a TV commercial.
"Picture Book" - the Kinks. HP used this in an ad a couple of years ago, and though it's usually a drag to hear one of my favorite songs being used to sell something, I gotta admit it was a pretty cool commercial.
4. Kickass cover song.
"Lullaby Of Broadway" - Bram Tchaikovsky. The criminally forgotten Bram Tchaikovsky had a brilliant way with a pop song, as demonstrated here. The minor hit "Girl Of My Dreams" is one of the real gems of the whole late 70s British pop thing.
5. Musical question...
"Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow?" - The Rolling Stones. And the answer?
6. And answer!
"That Was Your Mother" - Paul Simon
7. Third person song.
"She" - Emmylou Harris. I guess it doesn't get any more third person than that.
8. Uplugged - a favorite acoustic song.
"You And Your Sister" - Chris Bell. Chris was a member of the great band Big Star for one album, then left to record his own songs. Joining him here is his Big Star pal, and all around music legend, Alex Chilton.
9. A song about food.
"Junk Food Junkie" - Larry Groce. I'm hungry.
And now a word from our friends at your local Plymouth dealer.
10. Trains, Planes and Automobiles: song about a mode of transport.
"One Piece At A Time" - Michelle Shocked. It's really Johnny Cash's song, but just to shake things up a bit I decided to use Michelle Shocked's version. I like the way it moves, like that Caddy on the highway.
And now a word from our friends at Pete Epstein Pontiac.
11. A song that cheers you up.
"Love On A Farmboy's Wages" - XTC. Lots of XTC songs cheer me up, so I picked one of the best of the bunch.
12. Media - songs about radio, TV or other type of media (newspapers, magazines, whatever).
"Sunday Papers" - Joe Jackson. The man gone bonkers, gay politicians, learning how to play guitar...as though torn from today's headlines!
13. Add it up: Song with a number in the title...
"A Thousand Years Away" - The Minus 5
14. Plus another song with a number in the title...
"$1000 Wedding" - Gram Parsons
15. Equals third song with a number in the title.
"Disco 2000" - Pulp. I hope my math was right. Sorry I didn't show my work.
16. Banned! A song that is, or was in its day, controversial.
"The Pill" - Loretta Lynn. Though there wasn't a bigger star in country music in the early 70s, this was still banned on several radio stations. Lighten up, Francis.
17. A song about a family member.
"My Old Man" - Ian Dury & The Blockheads. Play it for Dad on Father's Day.
18. A favorite song that you have discovered since our last CD mix.
"Smile" - Lily Allen. It was either this or the Rehab song, but since that one is probably much more popular, I went with the other British chick.
19. A song that reminds you of an old friend.
"Cinnamon Girl" - Neil Young. One of my first online friends went by this name (still does), her favorite song. We'll be hanging out later in the month, in fact.
20. Amnesty song.
"(Baby, Baby) Can I Invade Your Country" - Sparks. This was my original pick for question song, but I couldn't come up with a decent answer title. Would "Okay" have been sufficient? Or maybe a "Don't"?
