Charles Perry of Canada and his Lineage

bar.gif

My great great grandfather,Charles Perry is thought to be born on February 14, 1810 in Toronto, Canada. As yet, after 10 years of research, I am still trying to document this. His death is put at Septmeber 4, 1891 in Gainesville, GA. This data is gathered from his headstone in Alta Vista Cemetery in Gainesville, GA. Except for a marriage document and an obituary notice and a single appearance on the 1880 Georgia Census, I have been unable to locate any other hard facts on this man, my father's great grandfather. What an enigma!
Charles Perry married Mary Margaret Mew Ferebee (1819-May 14, 1891), the widow of William Ferebee of Beaufort, SC, about 1848, as substantiated by a marriage document/pre-nuptial agreement dated August 19, 1847. The document lists details of Mary Ferebee's holdings and her children by William Ferebee. The couple moved to Savannah, GA and have four children- Stuart J. Perry, May 16, 1849-August 18, 1867, Henry H. Perry (sometimes referred to as Walter), September 1851-November 14, 1932, Charles Erskine Perry, May 27, 1856-August 15 1900, and Annie Perry, December 19, 1858-January 10, 1935. Charles Erskine Perry is my direct ancestor.

Myself, Linda Rochelle Perry Cooper in Rochelle, Florida, as a child. I developed a love of genealogy at a very early age from listening to wonderful family stories told by my father, Douglas Starke Perry, Jr. and my great aunt Irene Erskine Perry, who lived in Gainesville, Florida.

A great quantity of data has been amassed as I have researched this family. Several theories that I cannot substantiate are my main research focus. These theories have developed during my research and communication with other Perry and related line geneaologists. My theories are as follows:

1) Edward Perry and Charles Perry were brothers-unsubstantiated except for oral tradition and coincidence. There are one or two other Perry?s that I find in the area in the early 1840?s that come from British colonies. In fact there are another set of Perry boys listed in Savannah on 1850 census as Joseph Perry, 16, engineer, and Edward Perry, 16, carpenter, from England, living in close proximity. On at least one census, my Edward Perry gives his birthplace as England. I feel certain that Charles Perry I had siblings that went with him to the US.
2) Charles and Edward?s parents were Charles and Grace Nelson Perry.
3) Charles and Mary Perry lived in Savannah, GA in the years prior to and after the Civil War.
4) The siblings listed with Edward and Charles Perry are in question. They are listed with the father Isaac Perry on baptismal records in York, Canada. Could be that their father?s name was Charles Isaac or some combination. The names came from another genealogist who cannot verify them.
5) Charles Perry is not listed on any US census prior to 1880 in the South. (At least I cannot find him-I have had several other researchers look for him also. I have gone through the census index books and tried to look up every Perry in neighboring counties, etc.) Coincidentally there is a Charles Perry who reappears in York after 1850ish and is there until late 1870, with a similar profession that Charles Perry had prior to moving to SC in 1840. I think it is possible he really lived in Canada during those years. My last recounting of Charles Perry is from 1873 when he is reportedly selling Life insurance in Toronto. In 1874 his 18-year-old son has to leave college to work in his father?s lumber business south of Savannah. By 1884 Charles Erskine Perry is selling Life insurance in the western part of the US. And his father is living in Gainesville, GA with his other children, Henry H. Perry, a very successful lawyer and philanthropist and his daughter Annie and wife Mary. He lives here until he dies in 1896. Unfortunately, the Gainesville Eagle, the newspaper at the time, did not survive to review an obituary.
This family is my passion. Their lives are so fascinating to me. Someday I hope to be able to go to Savannah and continue my research.

He began his speciality in ObGyn in post graduate work at Universite de Nancy. The officers had to wait until the dough boys were home before they could be sent back, so the Army found studies for them in French universities. He married Margaret Middleton Williams of Mt. Pleasant, SC, a nurse, and had Lester A. Wilson, Jr. before the war. Julian M. Wilson was born after the war. He lived the last part of his life on over 700 acres outside Mt. Pleasant, SC.
