La Plata Alpacas is located in Southwestern Colorado where the La Plata mountain range forms a backdrop for our alpaca herd. We have lived in the Durango area since 1961 and purchased our starter herd in 1991. Our Huacaya animals come in many shades of grey, brown, black and white. Fiber color is one way breeders can compete in the fleece market as there is often a premium paid for natural colors in high fashion demand. Also since I was a weaver long before owning alpacas, the beautiful colors attracted me to their fleeces. Our small farm pays careful attention to detail and specializes in forming a partnership with buyers for continuing support. The animals are handled on a daily basis so are accustomed to human contact. All our animals have correct conformation and exhibit strong Alpaca type with prize winning fleeces.
