| sculpture by Justice, in progress |
I am so excited to be doing sculpture again. After a car accident
in 1992, I just couldn't handle physically, the demands of working in clay. I am so pleased to be actively connecting with
the earth and her rich elements (I was a ceramic artist for many years before being injured).
Kneeling into the soil again has renewed my reverence and
gratitude for nature's abundance, elegance and strength. My new studio in Nelson County is affording me a glorious relationship
with the magnificence of our valley.
I continue to paint the vast Universe that we are spinning through,
a longing that sometimes is satiated only by venturing out under the stars and standing so small in the indigo valley that
only hours ago glowed golden with fresh cut hay.
It is the daylight that calls me to carve and mold and sculpt monuments
to Universal Love.
It is the night that draws me into her mysteries, possibilities hinting
at being born, new life forming in catastrophic and glorious bursts.

Artists Statement:
It is stunning the amount of chaos required to produce even a small
amount of beauty. My studio, my home, my car have become laboratories for the cosmos. Everywhere are clusters of elements
(paint, chalk, clay, metal dust, graphite, minerals, glass chips, rain water,) combining to suggest form and the absence of
form, light and the absence of light. This practice of teasing out an image light years deep, asking specs of paint
to represent entire worlds, is simultaneously stimulating and calming. The Universe, between cataclysmic upheavals, is wonderously
peaceful. Not so different from my life.
Throughout most of my career, I have rendered finite ideas and illustrated
specific imagery; "this is a tree, this is a fish". I used symbology and metaphor, to convey a story. This new work, the planets,
galaxies and moons are open ended imagery, dependent entirely on the viewer's willingness to journey into unfamiliar territory.
Contemplating the terrain and atmosphere of other worlds is an exercise
in expansive thought.
Anchoring my consciousness into the cosmos gives me the breadth of
perspective necessary to truly appreciate home. I love this world, our world, so much. I paint her far off neighbors and I
live in wonder as to how light may fall upon them. How do they spin and what is dancing in their stormy winds?
I'm asking the viewer to place herself, himself into a larger context,
not just on earth, but in the great expanse of creation. I am interested in generating awareness that life itself is massive
beyond our comprehension. That we actually live in space. That we are spinning and seriously fast, through a neighborhood
of mind blowing proportion.
Movement, rhythm, tone, light and color can create and transform energy. I
want folks to see this artwork as alive, unfolding, as all life is unfolding. I believe that our ability to navigate through
the challenges that face us as a community are strengthened by coming together as neighbors in celebration of love and joy
and appreciation for Universal... even unfamiliar beauty. The unknown, the not yet known, need not be feared. Darkness, too,
can hold benevolence. Behold the night.
