Lines from The Gospel of Hedon

The first time I loved,
I didn’t know the fields
had fences.
I wandered around in circles
with her hair wrapped around my neck.
I choked on prayers and praises.
My eyes were blurry and weak.

Until the rapture comes
let’s pick the fruit and eat it.
The season is full and we are
heavy. We are like the boys of
summer.

Why don’t you learn to work, he said.
I shrugged and finished what I was doing.
