hail and farewell

after Garrod’s Catullus

as far as one can go the world abides
I am here to offer wretched gifts
unto the dead only in adieu
and say nothing to the deaf
I look on ashes and miss you
pitying one who should have lived
but ritual is comforting
and here I am to weep
accept these gifts of tears a-many
and forever brother hail and farewell
