In A Conch Shell

A popsickle girl

Janie P. Hanratty

we’re both ten

pumping our Schwinns

the summer in between

Alondra Park and the Alondra Park Apartments

faux Polynesian accents, palm trees, a Tiki god in front

Torrance and Gardena, California, 1961

buying candy and trading across

we imagined secret things

pretended we had gold, vast amassed fortunes,

what we had being that

was I in her diary

am I now?
