I've been building
the large Gertie the dinosaur concrete creatures
at the side of the road
steel frame, wire, laths of cement, green paint,
it comes alive
at least in the minds of kids who
scream to their helpless parents to stop
they'll stuff themselves at the worrisome diner buy
the cheapest put together desert lore toys
a ten cent drum (manufacturer's cost)
a plastic ready to fall apart Indian
a puff up dinosaur which won't last three days
but it's all part of growing up
years later you're seventy looking back
have a double-wide motor home
its gears work like sand
steering for all the dino highways you'll never see again
