This page deals with the ancestors of my maternal grandmother, Hettie "Leah" Brannon Sturm. She is more affectionately remembered as "Nanny". Nanny passed away this past Christmas Day at the age of 92. Nanny had an awful lot to do with my interest in family history. The picture to the right is of some pipestem fragments I have found at Nutter's Neck, MD.

My maternal grandmother?s maiden name was BRANNON. I remember my great-grandparents, Pap and Ma Brannon. I have came across much information on this line. I also have a good deal of information on distant cousins, but am leaving much of that data off this page due to space. I would be happy to share any information I have.
The BRANNON (BRANHAM) line is quite interesting. The DUDLEY line (which connects to JAMES BRANHAM) has their roots back to English Royalty. If the information is correct, the connection goes not only back to King Edward (I, II and III) but also further back to several Kings and Queens of France and Spain. There are also connections to William the Conqueror and Charlemagne. Due to the length of the data I have going back that far, I have not included it on this page.

The STARCHER family interconnects with both the BRANNON and NUTTER families. Much of this information came from my grandmother?s 2nd cousin Jeanne Bridges Forney. She also helped me with a lot of information on the NUTTER family that settled in WV. As with many of my other families, I have more information that I can share on this page.
GENERATION 1
JACOB (SR) STARCHER He married MARY ?. Some sources claim Mary was of Native American descent. I have no proof to this support this theory.

There is some question as to who was the mother of Henry Starcher (my ancestor). In 1804, the ?overseers of the poor? questioned to ability of Henry to raise his son Adam, by himself. This suggests that Mary Bush was deceased before the birth of Henry. However, the 1810 census lists two children (sons) and no female in Philip?s household. This suggests that Adam and Henry (b. 1807) were in the household. Phillip did not marry Rebecca Mace until about 1811, so either Henry is also a son of Mary Bush, or an unknown woman (another wife?) who had either passed away or left Philip and his two sons prior to the 1810 census. I have left Henry as a son of Mary Bush, but this has not been proven.
Children of PHILIP STARCHER and MARY BUSH are:
viii. ADAM STARCHER, b. 1802, Harrison Co., VA (WV); d. 1881.
ix. HENRY STRARCHER, b. 1807, Kanawha Co Va (WV); d. 1880, Calhoun Co., WV.

The WAYNE / McELWAIN line goes back to Scotland. The exact line has not been established, but I
have added some ?speculative? links on my personal database that I have chosen not to add at this time.

The NUTTER line is one of my most researched lines. For one reason, I live in Sussex Co., DE, not far from where many of my Nutter ancestors once lived. My family occasionally visit the Nutter?s Neck area in Wicomico Co., MD. This is the area that Christopher Nutter (the Government Interpreter to the Nanticoke Indian in the late 1600?s) lived the latter years of his life. This area is a State Wildlife Area (and public hunting) and has not been developed like so many other sites in this area.
Nutter?s Neck has been a special place to me since 1996 when I first went there to explore the area. In one field, various artifacts from the 1600?s through the 1800?s have been found by me and other individuals interested in local history. Many of the pipe stems found have been dated back to the late 1600?s. This technique of dating pipe stems if done by measuring the inside diameter of the stems and using a mathematical formula. The mean date for the 500 plus stems I have recovered in about 1675, not long after Christopher patented many parcels of land in Nutter?s Neck. One particular portion of a clay pipe bowl had the initials ?LW? on the side. This pipe was manufactured by Llewellyn Evans in Bristol England. Evans quit producing clay pipes in 1687.
Many of the ceramic fragments were analyzed by archeologists from St. Mary?s City and the Maryland Historic Trust. Many of these dated in the same time frame.
Nutter?s Neck is also special to me because this is where I proposed to my wife on September 3, 1998. I told Lisa to look for any type of artifacts and lo and behold, she found a little box with a diamond ring inside. Since then, we have made various trips there to wander the area on foot and on bike. My daughter Kaylin even made a trip there when she was about 3 months old. We will definitely go back sometime this spring.
There has been some debate as to the origin of the WV Nutter?s (my line) who established Nutter?s Fort in present day Harrison Co., WV. My ancestor, Matthew, was initially thought to be a son of John Huett Nutter. This, however, is unlikely as John Huett Nutter does not mention Matthew in his will. Matthew would have been only about 9 yrs old and his absence seems to suggest that Matthew was deceased. This thought that this Matthew was the Matthew who went to WV (VA at the time) was based on the name and his date of birth (1737) which match with the Matthew who arrived there around 1772. It is more likely that Matthew (as well as Thomas) were descendents of Christopher Nutter?s oldest son, John, who moved to the Slaughter Creek area of present day Sussex County, DE (about a 45 min drive from where I live). Documents show that Thomas (and Jonas Webb who also left the DE/MD area to settle in present day WV) were in Sussex Co. in 1760.
My grandmother, Nanny (Leah Brannon Sturm), told me stories of Caroline Nutter Starcher, her great-grandmother. She (Caroline) was the great granddaughter of Matthew Nutter. I even have an old leather billfold that belonged to her. Unfortunately, there was no old currency inside.
Please note that the lineage of Christopher to Matthew is speculation. I have not found the proof needed to state this lineage as fact. I do believe this is the most likely lineage, but I have been proven wrong before. Also, I have many, many names in this data base. I am listing a few generations past Christopher, but cannot list all information due to space. I am happy to share that information with any interested individuals.
GENERATION 1
CHRISTOPHER NUTTER was born 1637 in England, and died 1703 in Somerset Co., MD. He married MARY DORMAN 1664 in Northampton Co., VA, daughter of JOHN DORMAN and SARAH HICKMAN. She was born 1649 in England or Ireland, and died in Somerset Co., MD.
Note: JOHN DORMAN?s wife, SARAH?s last name is speculation. This is based on the close ties to the HICKMAN family (even to WV) and some documents as to individual immigrants sponsored by John Dorman.
Christopher served as Government Indian Interpreter for the province of Maryland. He was used as an interpreter to the Nanticoke Indians from 1680 until close to his death (1702/03). On August 11, 1687 "Mr. Christopher Nutter acted as interpreter at a conference between Col. William Stevens, Col. William Colebourne, and Mr. Francis Jenckins and Ofester, brother to the Emperor Munacocassimon (Unnacokasimmon) who appeared with Cotsh, Omapatoc, Wannameb, Hannstok, War Captian, Passemases, Chingpah, 'great men' of the Nanticoke Tribe, a similar council was held at St Mary's Sept. 14th 1687 at which Mr. Chrisopher Nutter acted as interpreter".
On Dec 8, 1688, Christopher Nutter was paid 4000 pounds of tobacco for services as interpreter to the Indians. He was also previously involved with Col William Stevens with laying out a reservation for the Nanticoke Indians in 1684.
Christopher apparently made "matchcoats" to be traded with the local Indians. A Somerset County Court record states: "Att a County Cort held ye 12th day of September in ye first year of ye Dominion of ye Rt Hon'ble Charles over Maryland &c Annoq Domini 1676 before his Lopps Justices thereunto assigned and authorized- Mr William Stevens, Col William Colebourne, Mr. David Brown..etc, etc, . Whereas Annacockison ye Emperour of nanticoke had made a proposicon to Mr James Jones and Christopher Nutter yt in lieu of a considerable quantity of Matchcoats to come to ye said Emperour from persons settled upon land in nanticoke and places adjacent according as people usually give him where ye Emperour claimes some prerogative which the said Emperour would content to reduce to a smaller value than hath been promised...etc.."
There is also evidence, based on the 6 leather chairs and cordwainers tools listed in Christopher's inventory, that he also manufactured leather goods.
Christopher received land in the present day town of Princess Anne Md called "Nutter's Delight" (150 acres) Feb. 10, 1666. This land was sold to Richard Ackworth July 30, 1667. They acquired "Nutter's Purchase" (300 acres) and "Kilmaynhom" (150 acres) Oct 12, 1666. "Nutter's Purchase" was located at the head of Manokin Creek in present day Princess Anne MD. Manokin Presbyterian Church, founded by Francis Makemie, stands today on this land. Their residence at "Nutter's Purchase" was selected in March 1671 as one of four religious meeting places to be held each Sunday in Somerset County, The services were to be officiated by Rev. Maddox and also included the home of Col. William Stevens. They sold "Nutter's Purchase" to Charles Ballard Nov. 21, 1672, and "Kilmaynhom" to Mary's brother, John Dorman, Mar. 12, 1672.
Christopher began acquiring and purchasing land near Quantico MD between Manumsco and Quantico Creeks. The first patent was for land called "Nutter's Adventure" (200 acres, 17 Nov 1670) followed by another tract also called "Nutter's Adventure" (550 acres, 1672), "Salisbury" (200 acres, 10 Sep 1677), "Dorman's Delight" (300 acres, 28 Jan 1678), "Shiles Choice" (220 acres, 20 Jul 1694) and "Morris' Lott" (100 acres, 14 Jun 1699. Christopher, Mary and their children moved to Nutter's Neck sometime between 1672 and 1674 based on the locations of the birth of their children.
He had two tracts of land surveyed; they were called "Attowattocoqun" (1200 acres) and "Tossewondoke" (130 acres) located in a part of Dorchester County MD that later became a part of Sussex County DE. This land was inhabited by Christopher's son, Charles.
Christopher patented a tract of land called "Hansell" in the present town of Vienna, Dorchester County, MD. The Nanticokes at the Chicone Reservation complained in 1698 that several white settlers were building plantations too close to the central area of their reservation. This included "Hansell", which was purchased by Christopher for more of a competitive move regarding Indian trade than an attempt to remove the Indians. In fact, Christopher Nutter's role with the Nanticoke Indians was not only beneficial to him, but also to the Indians, which is apparent as relationships between the white settlers and the Indians seemed to become destabilized after Christopher's death in 1702/03.
On August 2, 1662, Christopher Nutter was accused of removing Mary Dorman from the household of John Custis, who was her legal guardian. Christopher and Mary could not see each other without the consent of the Custis Family until she was of legal age. Christopher married Mary after she was released from servitude / guardianship of the Custis Family in 1664/5.

Matthew Nutter arrived in present day Harrison Co., WV with his cousins/brothers Thomas, John and Christopher. Together, they built and defended Nutter's Fort. Nutter's Fort afforded protection to the inhabitants on the West Fork of the Monogahela River from its source to the confluence with the Valley River; and to those who lived on Buckhannon River and Hacker's Creek, as well as to those of the immediate locality. When the Hacker's Creek settlement was entirely broken up by the Indians in 1779, the settlers who escaped took refuge in this fort where they aided in resisting the foe and maintaining possession of the country.
Matthew acquired land around Elk Creek and Brushy Fork Creek from 1772 to 1803. Among his neighbors and associates were the Lowthers, Hickmans, Davissons and Webbs. Jonas Webb and Sotha Hickman's roots also began in Sussex County, DE, suggesting that they travelled with the Nutter's from there to Harrison County. I do not have a lot of information of the LAYBOURNE line (RACHEL LAYBOURNE was the wife of JAMES STARR), but is mentioned here because of a strange coincidence I found concerning Rachel. While researching two different lines, I found Rachel to be a common ancestor through children she had by two different marriages; the first to THOMAS HUTTON and the second to JAMES STARR. The Hutton line connects with my ANDERSON line while the STARR line (as already mentioned) connects with my NUTTER/BRANNON line. These two lines converge with my grandmother.

My ANDERSON line is another line that I have many names included in my database. As I child, I remember attending the Anderson Reunion that was held at Mt. Zion Community Park in Calhoun Co., WV. Anderson is my great-grandmother?s maiden name. I have been able to track down quite a bit of information on this family from various sources including fellow researchers, books/articles, and census records. I have plenty of additional information I can share with anyone interested, but cannot include all the information on this page.

Charles Anderson was also a signer of the ?Bush Declaration? which was written before the Declaration of Independence.
